    Blunderbuss PRB

The difficulty loading a PRB made it a non-starter for me. I use buckshot for large things in the 30 yard or less range. Original loadings by stagecoach guards back in the day called for “pea-sized” shot.

    Rifle vs. Smoothbore

Smoothbore….16 gauge by Mike Brooks. Forty two inch barrel. Shot for birds; round balls for deer. Weighs six pounds four and points like a wand.

    How do you prime?

I prime with 3fg. I prime from a small flask.

    Removing rust in the barrel

Bored out to .54 would give you a nice 28 gauge smoothbore. Maybe cut the barrel back a bit to save some weight. A GPR is a tad heavy for an upland gun

    Trying to decide

I was in a similar position a few years ago. I went with a 20 gauge fowler made by Matt Avance at TVM. After a season or two in the PA uplands, I wanted something lighter and so I turned to Mike Brooks who made for me a very faithful copy of the New England #9 in Switlick’s book. It is a 16...

Best powder charge for Traditions Kentucky .50 cal percussion pistol?

I have a couple of .50 caliber underhammers. I have settled on 25 grains of FFFg as my go to load.

    Wads For a Smoothbore Pistol

Experiment. You may not need much. You will need a nitro card over your powder charge. Thick or thin? You may want to patch the round ball. The resulting fit should be tight…..you may have to tap it in with a hammer until it is past the muzzle. Using patch material like pillow ticking, your ball...

What do you carry in your hunting pouch for your shotgun?

V.M. Starr. Premeasured powder charges in capped vials. pre-measured shot charges in capped vials. A handful of stiff OP wads for over the powder and over the shot. Extra flints. Pick. small brush. Priming powder flask (small). If I go with the Skychief, a tin with soaked wads.

    Wad carrying?

I use a snuff tin or an empty tin from air rifle pellets

    Lyman Great Plains rifle

The Gpr was my intro to flint guns. Mine was third hand when I got it. I have it still for many years. Shoots great. I did buy a second barrel for it. Dont remember why. It sits in the closet.

Please help with exploring a smooth bore option!

Some years ago I was asking the same advice here when toying with the smoothbore idea. The advice was helpful. I was not interested in making one. I ended up asking Mike Brooks to put one together for me.(Guns For Sale - Mike Brooks Flintlocks). I wanted a light, fast handling gun for upland...

    Frizzen hardening question

I use Kasenit. I use two old plumber’s torches placed at 90 degs from each other. I hold the object in the flames (in the garage). I process the piece through the flame twice. Quench in quench oil. The pieces emerge hard.

Very nice to follow the work in progress.

    My New Mortar

Beautiful job. It doesn’t look at all crude to me. Note: wadding does increase distance. It also increases pressure. Search for Max Load to find a thread started by Grottorian in 2007. Good info. Look at the Safe loads and construction thread in the stickies section.

    My New Mortar

I have a few gb mortars. One I made on a little lathe from a design by Douglas Dickens.

Application of Barrel Brown & Degreaser

I have used the Laurel Mt. browning on an old Parker SXS. It came out of that glowing.

    Lyman Great Plains

Yes. That was shot for a contest on this website. I came in second.
