Making an artificial "tiger stripes" pattern on gunstock?

Arrogance has nothing to do with it. It just doesn't appeal to me. Didn't mean to crank your tractor. :shocked2:

    Patch box help

Here is a good instructional lesson from Hoot AL, who I think is a member of this board. Hope it helps. http://www.midiowa.com/hootalrifleshop/wooden_patchbox_lid.htm

Making an artificial "tiger stripes" pattern on gunstock?

I agree with Paul. These stripes are too consistent and don't have a natural appearance. Maybe he wasn't trying to make the wood appear natural, and was only trying to add some contrast to an otherwise plain stock. All the other stocks look more natural and captures the random patterns of...

    Sulfuric acid

bob243, Thanks for the info. I was under the impression nitric acid could not be delivered to a residential address. I came to this conclusion based on what I read, written on the various sites selling the chemical. I was seeking 35% concentration. This whole question may have been in vain, it...

    Sulfuric acid

Buffler Razz, I appreciate your concern for my health. I also have many years handling various types of acids on a daily basis in addition to other various HazMat agents. When referring to 98% sulfuric that would be the concentration before it would be diluted. Thanks again

    Pictures of the Vinegar stain

Well thats a pretty good finding. Was the vinegar white or apple? I made some stain with white vinegar and steel wool, turned the scrap piece of maple a funky blueish-grey. I'll have to give it another whirl with the barbed wire and see if I can duplicate what you have done here.

Looking for a good flintlock conical

I basically asked this exact question for the same barrel caliber and twist. Was told a short conical such as the REAL among others would be a good choice.

Hey thanks! How did the barrel turn out?

    Sulfuric acid

I appreciate all the comments. Apparently no one has ever experimented with sulfuric for making aqua fortis. I have a couple of bottles of Track's aqua fortis and realize how cheap it is, but it's not as cheap as me. :shocked2: Thanks for the input.

    Sulfuric acid

Has anyone experimented with sulfuric as opposed to nitric for making aqua fortis? Nitric is hard for me to come by, whereas sulfuric can be had by the gallons. A by-product of my workplace is 98% sulfuric, it's deemed scrap. I have to beg the Lab Techs for the nitric.

    Flint to drum conversion

Both Track and Dixie sell threaded drums. I'm not sure about the hammer but I think Track would be a good starting place to look.

    What Do Ya'll Think?

You can make a plain stock look pretty good by wiping the stain into a figure pattern little by little with each new coat. You can also use a propane torch and lightly scorch some figure into the wood. I've got and old gun I did this to and get many compliments on the "beautiful wood grain". I...
