    Obduration in MLs

Maybe it's the HB but then Maxis and REALs slug up also. So do the heels on my .310 Cadel bullets.

    Obduration in MLs

Assuming the powder being burned is 3Fg the pressure generated relative to the nominal velocity of 1000fps in the .40cal will not be at all very high. I doubt it will be enough to cause much if any lead upset. I have a rather dinky lil .40cal Minie ex a Lyman mould I understand Dixie...

    Split the ball

Finally I am getting a MLer section going in our club. Can I see some photos of set ups for 'split the ball'? Do you use plates either side or clays.

Brushing out the GPR patent breech

I am babysitting a .54cal GPR right now and one of the main reasons I don't shoot it is the ridiculous chamber idea. It is a right royal PITA in opinion.

    Are flintlocks fast..........

I consider the answer to be "it depends on what you have". My flinter wears a deluxe Siler by Chambers. When I received all the parts from TOTW I disassembled the lock and polished all the bearing surfaces until they were like mirrors. In addition I relieve the back of the mainspring so it...

    cast vs. swaged

I cast all my own .395's for my .40cal RB rifles. Consistency is very good. Keep the alloy at a consistent temperature and pour each ball the same. Smooth rhythm is the search to casting. My variance on a 94gr would be + or - 0.5gr as a rule.

    Best Target Ideas

One of the best targets I have seen was a soda bottle with a rod about 2 foot long out the top and a 2 inch square target on the top of the rod. The bottle was charged with enough ballist to keep it upright then set out in a pond. With the motion of the water and wind it made for a challenging...

    Powder for my .36 cal....?

Not only 3Fg but Swiss 3Fg. Now I know all you American folk like to buy US made and good on you but in the small bore the clean, hot Swiss is nothing short of magnificent.

    Crack Shot

Also shows Grandpa had don't his bit with load development.

    Blackpowder prices at Friendship

Cheap! When BP is available here it is 3 times that price and mostly it will be rubbish from China.

Patch lube used by match winners

I discovered it many years ago. I was shooting and grouping only average at best. As I went to seat a ball I noticed that the moose milk I used at the time was very visable in the bore. I dried the barrel AFTER seating the ball and behold, the cloverleaves began to appear.

Patch lube used by match winners

There is far to much emphasis put on lubes much like there is in cast bullet shooting. At the extremes I am sure some are better than others but the most important thing I find is HOW you use the lube. Too much patch lube grows group sizes. I tend to apply a minimal amount to the patch then...

My 1st Flintlock, and 1st build.

Lovely. I built my first rifle about 8 years ago. It is also an Isaac Haines but in .40cal. It allows me to shoot rather well.

    The Great .40

40gr with Swiss is not a soft load. 1850fps.

    The Great .40

Don't be so sure that a longer barrel will give you more velocity. I have a .40cal caplock that I put a 39 inch barrel on. Later I decide to amputate 6 inches so cut it to 33 inches. The velocity of my 25gr load when UP and the top end load of 40gr (all Swiss powder BTW) stayed the same.

    Ballistol

One of the less widely acknowledged uses is as a wimmin repellent. Sure keeps 'em out of your man cave! :blah:

    New muzzleloader shooter........long term.

Five years on guys. My little girl Kiera is about to start school. And this is her sister Abby. How time flies. If I get any more proud I swear I will burst.

    Does ballistol always stink ?

Yeap. I concur. Keith put me straight on this years ago and now my 'man cave' is wimmin free!!

    What caps do you use?

CCI for the range but I just bought some RWS for hunting as they are longer and fit very tightly on the nipple. Don't want 'dead man's click' in the field.
