Best gunfight- Eastwood entering the saloon to get the Sheriff in "The Unforgiven".

    woohoo!! Powder

Sen. Launtenberg from NJ wants greater control and limits on Black powder purchases. He is as anti-gun as you can get. They used BP in the Boston bombs, so it is not unexpected to get this reaction. It probably won't get far, but there might be just a little more regulation- which is costly.

paper cartridge pattern for Brown bess

There are two types pf paper patterns- English and French. The English used string to tie theirs closed, The French preferred glue. Reenactors using blanks can just fold theirs. I use a shotgun type crimp on my tubes- I fold the tube closed by pressing an edge in and across, 3 times, then...

    billhook help!!!

A guy in my reenacting unit just bought one on line and had it shipped for $50 total. Cheaper than you can get one from a US merchant.

    smoothbores on a TV show

This movie maker statement is usually just an excuse...is it more entertaining to use Brown Besses cut down with a saddle ring added, or just cheaper/easier? --- "One of the movie makers from the Hatfield and McCoy series said it best." "They like to be as historically accurate a possible but...

    another goofball on youtube

There were complaints by both sides that the enemy were doing things like putting nails into balls. Some have even been found. But it was a rare practice, only good for the first shot. You can't make cartridges with a nail in them! Buck and Ball would have been more common, and more useful...

    Who carries a time piece?

time pieces were unnecessary for most people in the 18th Cent. and before. Anyone who needed to know the time and could afford one might have one. Ships officers, for example, needed to know the time...time and tide... Other people might need to know the difference between 10 and 11 o'clock...

    Sharpen a bayonet???

Triangular bayonets as on the Bess had no real edge to sharpen. You might sharpen the point some, but it is a stabbing weapon, not made for cutting. The shape is made that way so you get the strongest possible stabbing weapon, with the least amount of weight. Some people claim it was to...

    My misterious cannon

It could be a swivel gun, used on small boats, the fighting tops of sailing ships, etc. That area was used during the Revolution by whale boats on raids, which usually carried several swivel guns- from small to large, up to 6 pounders- although I don't know how you would attach a six pound...

    The Mountain Men question

There was a write up in the NRA gun magazine when the movie came out about the guns used. I remember that the Indians used trap door Springfields that had been modified to look like older guns...!!!!

    Too many guns ?

Guns are tools. Each one has a specific purpose. If you have many types of needs, you need many guns...like screwdrivers and wrenches. Some people get by with a flat head and a phillips, some have a whole rack of various size screwdrivers, and another of wrenches.

Powder substitutes and the Pedersoli 2nd Model Brown Bess

Only BP will reliably ingnite in the pan using a flintlock. Subsitutes are made to be lit off using some kind of cap. The problem is not safety- Subs and BP are made to be used interchangeably--EXCEPT in the pan of a flintlock. Subs just don't work well.

    Shooting the Pedersoli Brown Bess

I agree it must be your hold...don't drop your face down so far, make sure you are holding it snugly against the shoulder. You should rock back with recoil, not get smacked by it.

Exporting a Reproduction Muzzleloader from the US

Legally, exporting something is buying it in a foreign country, then sending it to another. If you bring personal property into the USA and back to Australia, you need only have them legally in each country. US laws do not recognize muzzleloading firearms as firearms...but some states do...

The Brigade of the American Revolution is having an event there in July. Only BAR members can attend though.

    Smoothbore Paper Cartidges

I have not tried this with a lead ball, but I think it will work. Instead of just crimping over the end of the paper tube, I crimp it over (in three sections, center, right, left)then pull the dowel back 1/8 of an inch and then crimp the edges of the tube into the center, forming a shotgun...

    March to Trenton

The committee decided we will explore repeating this in 5 years. Undoubtably the march will begin earlier and go slower, but will thus be disconnected from the crossing somewhat, with many being bussed to the march later.

    March to Trenton

In retrospect the march was too fast. It had to be done in 3hrs, 45 minutes, but we did it in 3 hrs. 16 minutes... the first half was done right on schedule, but we gained 15 minutes on the 2nd half...Once we realized we were ahead of schedule, we could not slow down- people were too foot and...

    March to Trenton

Thank you, I will pass that on. It was actually 9. 6 miles, and done in 3 hours, 16 minutes!!! It was brutal, but it was impossible to slow down once we started to hurt, or we would have taken 5 hours or more. My blister only hurt a little now, but the muscles still are somewhat stiff on...

    March to Trenton

As measured the march was 9.3 miles to the Monument...and another half mile or so to the Barracks. This event was created to make the 235th anniversary of the Battle memorable. We were to have done a special crossing as well, but the river just never dropped low enough in time to do so...
