Springfield Model 1795 Barrel Band Spring Repair or Replace

Thanks for that idea Rick. The musket came out of the George Moller collection.

Springfield Model 1795 Barrel Band Spring Repair or Replace

I'd love to see the pictures when you are done. The welding you are talking about is probably more technical / precise than anything I've done. What steel do you recommend if I wanted to fabricate something? I'm doubtful I'll find an original part, but let me know if you know of any around.

Springfield Model 1795 Barrel Band Spring Repair or Replace

I was fortunate enough to pickup an original Springfield Model 1795 type 1 recently. The musket is in overall Good condition and everything seems to be functional aside from the front barrel band spring which is broken at the base of the long section. I'd prefer to keep the gun 100% original...

Need Guidance on Damaged Cherry Corners Lock Hammer on Older Contemporary Hawken

I managed to find a close match, and adjust the clocking well enough to work. I think it looks reasonably consistent with the original parts.

Need Guidance on Damaged Cherry Corners Lock Hammer on Older Contemporary Hawken

Hi Poker. Thanks for taking the time to measure this, I really appreciate it! It does look to be about an 1/8 inch shorter throw than my lock. I'm going to try a TOW hammer that appears to be clocked the same and is close to the right throw. If that fails, I may just need to weld it up and...

Need Guidance on Damaged Cherry Corners Lock Hammer on Older Contemporary Hawken

The situation is getting pretty ridiculous. Time to run insurance coverage up I suppose. I had a business shipment with UPS years ago. 45 pound crate insured for $30,000. They delivered an 10 pound empty crate with a big hole in the side. It took me 3 months to get paid.

Need Guidance on Damaged Cherry Corners Lock Hammer on Older Contemporary Hawken

Thanks Mike. I had not seen that hammer, much closer to the throw of my existing hammer.

Need Guidance on Damaged Cherry Corners Lock Hammer on Older Contemporary Hawken

I had hear that Uberti used the Cherry Corners lock as a pattern, but I have not seen one of their hammers to know one way or the other. Any chance you could measure the throw on your rifle?

Need Guidance on Damaged Cherry Corners Lock Hammer on Older Contemporary Hawken

Hi Folks, I picked-up an old contemporary custom built Hawken, and it was damaged in shipment to my house. Essentially, the box was dropped or crushed to the point the hammer broke through the packaging and ended up getting bent and cracked. After disassembly, I was able to determine the...

Great Great Grandfather's Manton Shotgun London or Belgium?

I found this on another sight today: https://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=368613 "ROSE'S were Rose Brothers Gun and Pistol Barrel Makers of 13 Newton Street, Birmingham and Hales Owen Mills and Forge (1860-70) Miss R. Rose, agent, 13 Newton Street (1864-70)...

Great Great Grandfather's Manton Shotgun London or Belgium?

Thanks for that. I might try cleaning up something on the bottom of the barrel to see if any twisting becomes visible. any recommendations for how to approach that?

Great Great Grandfather's Manton Shotgun London or Belgium?

A hardware store gun sounds most appropriate. My family have been farmers for a long time in Germany, and continued doing so until very recently when we came to the US. This shotgun put food on the table and killed varmints that threatened livestock or were "grazing" in the garden. It stood...

Great Great Grandfather's Manton Shotgun London or Belgium?

There were knock-off Mantons being made in Belgium in the 1800s. They were not bad guns, but not a nice as the real thing.

Great Great Grandfather's Manton Shotgun London or Belgium?

Using this site: Proof mark dates for British Guns it appears to have Birmingham barrels manufactured between 1855 - 1868

Great Great Grandfather's Manton Shotgun London or Belgium?

I do see the name Rose's or Bose's or something to that effect on the barrel. I also notice some letters on the opposite barrel that might say the same name where the two barrels are joined.

Great Great Grandfather's Manton Shotgun London or Belgium?

Thanks for the idea. I have popsicle sticks and some Renaissance Wax, so I'll try that first. I didn't know if 0000 steel wool was recommended or not.
