What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

    58 cal conical or minnie

That was the appeal and beauty of the Minie bullet. Undersized at loading. Once fired the pressure expands the skirt to engage the rifling. It, along with the Pritchet bullet were game changers.

    Death of muzzleloading

I bet there were also many a frugal and cantankerous soul that continued to use them. Can just hear em. You kids these days and your fancy brass smokeless cartridges. Firing off shots as fast as you can blnk. Back in my day.......

I don't understand used gun pricing

If I hadn't just ordered a Kibler kit, I would have have bought that pistol from ya. Been on my short list for a long while. Maybe another one will be around when I save up enough Bens.

I don't understand used gun pricing

The price of the item is whatever the seller and buyer agree to. I for one always ask more than I expect because you will get the inevitable offer of 10% or more less than your asking price no matter what.

How I lube cut at the muzzle patches

Weight. Put a pot on a scale, add as needed then heat it to melt together. If I recall correctly, it is basically SPG lube. Same ratio.

How I lube cut at the muzzle patches

Have heard good things about Mr. Flintlocks. Using my mix, I dont swab between shots either. I use this same lube mixture for patches in rifles, cap and ball pistols, and making metallic cartridges in both black and smokeless. I never have to stop at the range due to fowling issues or any...

How I lube cut at the muzzle patches

From my notes on it. I forget now where I got the forumla from. Was not my own creation. Yes, standard lard from the grocery store. Crisco would be fine to. 5 parts beeswax 4 parts fat 1 part oil

How I lube cut at the muzzle patches

I do indeed. Haven't seen one of those canisters in years. Was going through some of my old junk not long ago and came across a package of negative strips. Showed our ancient tech to the kids. Yeah, we would take a picture and not know it was awful for almost a week. I use a non...

How I lube cut at the muzzle patches

I roll them up tight and put in a small ziploc bag until ready to use. Maybe the temp of the lube. It is too hot to touch during the dip. The excess drips down pretty quick. Then rolled up for several weeks before they are actually used. All seems to be pretty even when I go to use them.

How I lube cut at the muzzle patches

All but used up my supply today so figured I would share my process. cut pillow ticking to width, melt my pot of lube(bees wax, lard and Balistol) dunk the strips to saturate them, hang to cool and set. Then roll up and done. Makes it pretty handy when loading from the bag.

At what point to stop cleaning?

I shot twenty, 80 grain charges of holy black today and it took this many patches to clean it out. Upper left is last patch. There will always be a little bit left, Mix of Balistol and water.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Took a bit of filing, and about 20 shots, but I was able to get a the buckhorns adjusted for the .54 Renegade to give me minute of deer hold out to 100 yards with 80 grains of ffg and a PRB. With my old eyes I can use this like a ghost ring and pick up the front bead pretty easily.

    What shortage?

Odd. One would think they would remove them from the catalog if you can't order.

    What shortage?

Looks like The Gun Works has a supply of caps, all kinds. 1,000 at a time though. Worth it https://www.thegunworks.com/custprodgun.cfm?SubCat1ID=75&Cat1Name=Percussion%20Caps
