Another unknown percussion rifle from the Appalachians.

I had wondered about that but didn't know. It has been in my family for a very long time and I honestly thought it was lost up until a while back.

Another unknown percussion rifle from the Appalachians.

Here's another old rifle I've always wondered about from here in Southwest Virginia. It looks like it's around 36 or 40 caliber but that's just a guess. I don't have a clue about the date it was made considering it was still being used up until around 1915 or so for squirrel and stuff.
  3. Oleredbeard

    The little mystery smoothbore.

It was given to me at age 7 by a man who said his brother brought it back from Europe.
  4. Oleredbeard

    The little mystery smoothbore.

    3.2lbs... 3 pounds 2 oz. Or... 1.4515 kilograms.

    The little mystery smoothbore.

You guys are a cauldron of wisdom for sure! I will try that load. I was actually just reading about it a few days ago. I'll post some photos of it's pattern when I get a chance to take it out behind the house again. To this day I've yet to see one like it or similar. I just weighed it and it's...

    The little mystery smoothbore.

I will try to look around online and see what I can find about Turner Kirtland products. I've never shot a ball through it but sure used to shoot alot of shot in it. Doesn't throw a very good pattern but it does the job decent enough most of the time.
  7. Oleredbeard

    The little mystery smoothbore.

It was given to me around 30 years ago. I shot it quite a bit back then but don't use it much any more. I have put a many a rabbit and squirrel in the pot with it though. The man that gave it to me said his brother brought it home from Europe but never said when.

    Little Horn

Already looks like it'll be a great looking horn!

    New range rod.

Now that's going to be a very original and good looking range rod!

A few more with some measurements.

    The little mystery smoothbore.

Here's a few more pictures to give an idea of it's size
  12. Oleredbeard

    The little mystery smoothbore.

I've never shot round balls in it. Just shot. Always been afraid of doing so due to its unknown history.
  13. Oleredbeard

    The little mystery smoothbore.

Around a half inch inner diameter or 12.2 mm. Swamped barrel.
  14. Oleredbeard

    The little mystery smoothbore.

I don't know to be honest. I will however measure it with a micrometer. I've always thought it looked roughly the diameter of either a 28ga or a 60cal.
  15. Oleredbeard

    The little mystery smoothbore.

Hello everyone, I was given this old smooth bore as a kid and packed it around for a long time off and on growing up. I never got around to actually identifying it and was hoping someone here possibly could. I think it is Belgian proof marked ELG but I do not know. The gun might weigh 2 lb if...

Howdy from the trail of the lonesome pine in SW Virginia.

Finally decided to be part of the NMLRA and figured I might as well join up on the forum. Looking forward to picking the brains of all the talented and knowledgeable folks on here. I've been a muzzleloader man most of my life and love to shoot and hunt with them no matter their shape size or...
