How far will a BP cannon shoot a golf ball?

I’m not sure that that much range is possible but maybe. This has to make me ask; what is the point of firing something out of a mortar if you can’t tell where it lands? Why not just shoot blanks? The point of firing something from a mortar is to see how far it goes and to try hitting...

    grenade mortar soon

Great looking work! Brass is such a pleasure to work with. The small mortars don’t take long to make once you get going. How are you retaining the trunnion?

Mythbusters, Cannon, Pigs and the like...

I think we have to remember that Mythbusters is entertainment with the guise of being science. It is one of those shows that you love to hate. The fact that they couldn’t find a cannon makes me question their research ability. Here is a good video from when this topic came up over at...

    Cannon vent.

A vent size of 0.2 in was for the most part universal during the American Civil War. It works well for most forms of ignition.

    Making a cannon

Do a search for “buck sticks”. The cannon information isn’t bad. Other sections have to be taken with a grain of salt.

    Making a cannon

Here is a pic of the 12pdr coehorn mortar that I built. It is a slightly scaled down version of the 24 pdr. It is turned from solid 1018 steel. I would personally avoid 4140 unless you can weld it properly. With out proper preheating and cooling hard spots can form in the weld area.

    New Gonne

This one is 50 cal. I shot it a few times with ffg goex. It wasn’t much for accuracy. The bore was drilled so it was rather rough. That was one of the reasons I got rid of it. I have a few other plans that I’ve come up with but I have yet to build. The fg can is one I had around. I also...

    New Gonne

Here is my version I built a couple of years ago. It has since gone on to another home. I think I might need to build another.

    Explosion waiting to happen?

I have seen several similar bowling ball mortar designs that use old high pressure gas cylinders. I don’t know if I would jump to the conclusion that it is unsafe right away. For one thing the person writing the description is not the one who built it or designed it. The tubing used looks...

    12 pound mountain howitzer plans

The AOP plans are only $10 vs. the $80 that he wants. Buckstix design also has a big flaw in that it does not have a vent liner. Over time black powder fowling will work itself between the breach plug and the barrel causing corrosion. This will weaken the barrel possibly leading to failure.

    12 pound mountain howitzer plans

I have not seen buck stixs plans but they seem over priced. I have the AOP set of plans and they are well worth the price. They give everything you need to build a accurate replica.

    Simulating recoil

A blank should be just that a blank. Nothing else should be placed in the bore. Anything you place in the bore will become a projectile. Sand is an especially bad choice. I have heard of at least one cannon blowing up from sand being placed in front of a charge. If you want a realistic...

    Our club cannon

I’m upstate, really upstate; in fact if I stand on tip toes I can see Canada. I also have family near Saratoga Springs.

    Our club cannon

Nice looking cannon! It is nice to see some one else in NY. I have to say that I am against the practice of proofing a barrel. If it is a good design there is no need to proof it. If it is a bad or even a good design it will cause more harm than good.

    Another Gonne added...

I am the one responsible for the creation of the gonne. I’m glad you are happy with it Claypipe. I’m usually over at Graybeard’s but check over here quite often. I need to see what escapades Squire Robin is up too and to see what’s new. Here is a copy of the drawings. It’s not a bad design...
