How do you stabilise your rifle for load testing/sighting in?

Shooting sled to get the group centered. I want the rifle barely moving at all. But it almost always prints higher than what I get from shooting off-hand, kneeling or rested on my hand. So there is always a little bit of fiddling after the sled sight-in to fine-tune where I want the ball to...

    Gardening Round2 Deer problem

I don't yet have any personal experience gardening with the local blacktail/mulies. But the previous property owner had a 6' fence around his garden area & said it kept the deer out. I have bees on that property now and while deer aren't a threat in the least, the bears are. For them, I use a...

Short Barrel Rifles verses Long Barrel Rifles test. Details Below...

A couple things come to mind that muddy the waters a bit. The longer barrel rifle is flintlock vs the shorter is percussion. I don't know about your rifles but the vent of my flintlocks is significantly wider than the hole at the bottom of a nipple. That loss of pressure in the flint system...

Why no black powder hunting personalities

TV entertainment has changed -- off the networks & onto social media, YouTube, etc. Along with Clay Hayes & Ryan Gill (mostly traditional & primitive archery but occasional flintlock stuff), I enjoy Everything Black Powder. Great channel with fun content, constant experimentation & learning...

Casting Lead balls for the first time _ advice Needed...

Lead's casting temp vs vaporization temp is a narrow range & hard to keep steady over a campfire. You're outside -- that's good. But it's still not something I'd want to do often. Plenty of things were done "traditionally" for years before we learned better. Make sure the wind is at your back.

    Prison Birds

I had a quick hunt yesterday. I had an opportunity to hunt a piece of private land that happens to be adjacent to a minimum security prison. The birds roost there but can be tough to call over sometimes. Yesterday, I tried a different tactic. I gave them a few good calls, got some gobbles back...

    Just One Gun

I never felt that my accuracy at normal ranges has much of anything to do with the rifle I happen to pick up that day, assuming the inherent accuracy of the rifle is about the same. The shot is the shot. At extended ranges, where I'm being more intuitive about the drop, then my familiarity can...

    20 percent more powder?

By "certain," are you referring to homemade? If so, sorry, we can't discuss that here.

New to me Pedersoli 12 guage

I've been playing around with a new (to me) Pedersoli 12 ga with removable chokes. One trick I learned here is to take the fiber cushion wad & break it up into 2-3 pieces. That way, they can each be bent a little to get past the choke tube & then they straighten out once you push them down...

    PRB or Bullet?

I think the deer will be scared of both. I use PRB because it's what I practice with (cheap) and the recoil is very mild by comparison. A 300 gr conical is definitely a little more accurate for my main hunting rifle. But <100 yards, it's not enough to matter.

    2024 Turkey Hunting

Got my percussion SxS ready & good to about 30 yards. The trade gun & longbow are ready as well. There's a lottery hunt nearby that's archery only & I know EXACTLY where to go for that one. This will be my 8th consecutive year applying for that hunt without success. It's always some idiots...

    Pedersoli Upgrades?

I have a Pedersoli trade gun that I listed for sale here but hasn't got any acceptable offers. So I decided to hang on to it and play with it a bit more. Among the things I've considered doing is upgrading the lock. I had read somewhere here that TOTW has a drop-in replacement that should...

    Can’t find a rifle!

The locks themselves aren't the problem for me. Yea, they can eat up flints but I don't much mind that part. Sparks are hitting the pan perfectly and the pan flashes reliably. I drilled out the flash hole on both to 1/16 (0.0625) since my next size up is 5/32 (0.078125). I can get fairly...

    Can’t find a rifle!

I have 2 pedersoli flintlocks. There will not be a third. I swapped the lock on one to convert it to percussion. The other is either going to be sold or I'll end up buying a new vent & maybe a new lock to upgrade it. The ignition is simply too slow to really shoot well for a flincher like me.

    Round ball and blood trails

Blood trails are not reliable for any weapon, in my experience. Sometimes they're there. Sometimes, they're not. Entry & exit holes increase the likelihood that there will be something but it's never a guarantee. If the idea is just that a conical is more likely to exit than a round ball...

    Do you gut your deer?

I've heard of people who don't gut their own deer. I've heard of even more people who won't hunt because they don't simply don't know how to do the field care. They went through the course but stop there because they just don't know what to do with a deer once they've got it on the ground...

    New member from California

Welcome from CA. You may already know this but there's still some unexploded ordinance along the central coast. So be careful what you dig up. There's also old pipelines from offshore wells that have been capped. I've also heard stories about the military setting up tank & anti-aircraft...
