Dovetail Jigs.......

Do they really work well? I know a good one is at least $50. I guess it would be a good addition to the bench for later projects. Anyone just use a hacksaw and hand file?

    Back Action Percussion Rifle

Thanks for the kudos guys, I think just about any old gun, if it's all there and the barrel is safe to shoot, well, fire it up again!! There are the ones like the trade gun thou, that should have little if any done to them. I'm always on the hunt for a new "Victim" to work on. All of these old...

    Back Action Percussion Rifle

Well, got out and shot the ol' girl last weekend. Other than adjusting the sight, it shot well. Did not have time to really zero it it, but it loaded smooth and fired all the rounds I put thru it. Started with .39 patched ball and 40 grains of FF. I think 50 grains is what I will stick with.

    Back Action Percussion Rifle

My rifle, my methods, done deal. Never plan on selling it anyways, just gonna shoot it and use it for living history. I have no place for "Wall Hangers" in my collection.

morelic55, You may be able to preserve the original plug. The tang likely can be repaired. This may be the best course of action because the plug threads may be obsolete. I would strongly suggest sending the barrel to someone like Bobby Hoyt or at least getting advice from a reputable BP...

    Back Action Percussion Rifle

Well thanks, I'm not a collector or a pro restoration authority. Like I said if it would of had a name or proof marks on it I would of considered a different route to take on it.

Well I was lucky on the lock, just a little elbow grease with 0000 steel wool. The barrel was a different story, I had to take it down to the white. I plum browned it leaving some of the dark highlights in the original metal. I also just cleaned the brass just enough to leave a brown patina on...

No history except that the house that it came out of was built in the 1880's. The pic was taken just where it was found in the basement ceiling.

    Back Action Percussion Rifle

The trigger is iron. And I have just started to work on it. The Tang is gone just where the screw goes thru. A couple of cracks in the stock that I have addressed and the patchbox latch pin is missing. I figure since there are no other markings on it that I will clean it up and make it shoot. I...

Picked this up last week, I think I can make it shoot. 1" barrel, 40 cal. The only markings on it are LONDON on the lockplate. Any Ideas on age? [/img] [/img]

    Converting A Cap To Flint

One of the other methods I've been told is to just cut the drum off and drill & tap it for a touch hole insert.
