    my new tube

I got her finished. The whole carriage was made with no power tools except for a spindle sander on the wheels. All of it was handle planers and hammer and chisel. I think I have about 50 hours in it.

Yeah its pretty cool. Although there was a Civil War skermish there, there are no public cannons on display that I know of. My dad is in charge of Vietnam Veterans of America there and he's erecting a helicopter memorial. I told him that a cannon was a better idea but he's not going for it.

I got my barrel from Marlin Schroeder in Nebraska.

    my new tube

I posted in a previous thread a picture of my barrel. I just thought I would post about how it was coming along. This is my first cannon build so don't be critical of my design. I didn't have any plans so I eyeballed pictures online and made my own. The naval carriage is being made out of white...

    That's sweet! I love it.

    my new tube

Thank you. I'm still doing surface work on it to get a shine. I'm gonna try clear coating first and if that doesn't work out than I'm going to paint it black.

My new gun finally arrive today. 20" long, 40 lbs, and a bore of 1.7"

    cannon finish question

I knew the cost of nickel plating would be high. I found a guy about 20 miles from me that does it. I've decided to go with stove black for now. I can always go back and have it plated down the road if I decide.

    cannon finish question

Do you think so? I wanted it to look Purdy but I'm now leaning in that direction. Either stove black or gloss. I really don't know yet. I'll probably end up painting it but I don't know how to decide.

    cannon load

Thanks but what grade of powder do you recommend? 1 F or cannon grade?
  12. P

    cannon load

Is cannon grade powder going to be ok to use in a 1 3/4" bore? I didn't know if my bore was to small for that.

    cannon load

My smith proof tested already but I will follow your advice. Thank you.

    cannon load

I'm sure this has been gone over before but how many grains should a load be? In this case I have a 1 3/4 bore. I've been told what the old guys did is pour the powder until you couldn't see the ball and that was the charge. How many grains for a max load?

    cannon finish question

Stove black is what my uncle told me to use but I want to go with something a little more flashy. I didn't get any response on my question about nickel plating it. Would this be an option? Would it stand up to the heat and be durable?

    cannon finish question

I'm looking into nickel plating. Any takes on that?

    cannon finish question

That's a good looking mortar. I do like the blue. I guess it can't hurt to try bluing. That's a lot of surface to cover with it. I haven't even received the barrel yet. The builder said I should have it in about a week. I'll post pictures when it gets here.

    cannon finish question

I definitely know what a black scale cannon looks like but I can't seem to find any that are blued so it's hard to decide. I just think it would look really nice. I agree that the black would probably be the way to go in terms of accuracy. I wish there were cannon enthusiasts in my area where I...

    cannon finish question

I'm a traditionalist but my wife is a bit more modern so this thing is going to double as decoration and my personal wants. I don't like the idea of modern paint. Do you know how they would have made the stove black? My common sense tells me that they would have taken the soot water and used...

    cannon finish question

If I was to brown the barrel would that be inaccurate? I'm told they normally used something called stove black.
