    Cleaning metal parts?

I have found Brasso to work well to clean my brass parts. What seems to work well to clean the outside of the barrel and other metal parts? My metal parts are in the white (not blued or browned). After a 3-day hunting trip last weekend, some spots (discolorations) on the white metal parts seem...

    avocado oil for patch lube?

We use avocado oil for stir frying at high temperatures, so yesterday I finally tried the avocado oil for patch lube. The accuracy didn't seem to improve, but there seemed to be a very slight reduction in fouling. I can't recommend it since the change was barely noticeable. It improves the taste...

Need help analyzing my first outing

I have been experimenting with various wad thicknesses and lubes. I've tried three thicknesses of leather wads: 1/8" thick, 3/16" thick, and 1/4" thick (see photo below, my fingers are holding the 1/4" thick leather with the two other thicknesses resting on top). For patches, I use .25 thick...

    avocado oil for patch lube?

I just noticed at http://www.goodeatsfanpage.com/collectedinfo/oilsmokepoints.htm that avocado oil has a very high tolerance to temperature. Has anyone tried it for patch lube? It seems at face value that it would work extremely well.

    I don't know--that's a good question. Does anyone know?

    Rain and the Flintlock

I plan to go dear hunting this year. Given the unpredictability of the weather, what seems to work for flintlocks in a light drizzle?

Need help analyzing my first outing

It took a while for my new leather cutter to arrive, but today I shot 6 loads of 5 shots each using a leather wad ahead of the patch. It solved all my problems with blown and cut patches. Now, most of the patches are actually reusable although I don't try to reuse them. My new loads use .25...

    Stuck Jag

Ouch! Since the taps are often case hardened, drilling it out would be doubly hard. I wouldn't know what to do next.

    Stuck Jag

While cleaning my ML today, I used a new accessory. I threaded it onto the rod and ran it down to the breach. Upon trying to pull it back, the accessory came loose--stuck in the breach. I had that sinking feeling. I immediately felt near panic with visions of needing to take my ML to a...

Hopeless #9: Bad even for short term storage

I'm 65 and have never had a problem either. However, I know the bore was super clean and I know it was bone dry. So tonight I squirted the same oil on a steel wool pad that is shiny new--without rust. I'm curious to see if it starts rusting after a few days. None of this makes any sense to me.

Hopeless #9: Bad even for short term storage

I used Hoppes #9 lubricating oil and our house is very dry. ]Hoppe's #9 lubricating oil[/url] Before lubing the bore, I ran two dry patches down the bore to make sure that it was totally dry. My habit is to twist the patch a half turn when it reaches the breach to make sure that any water...

Hopeless #9: Bad even for short term storage

Last Friday I shot about 25 rbs through my ML and then washed it out with soapy water and put her to bed with the bore lubed with Hoppe's #9 oil. I normally wouldn't do that, but since I knew that I would shoot her again in a few days, I thought it would be OK. I was wrong. Today (3 and a half...

Neatsfoot oil as a patch lube?

In looking at the different manufacturers for neatsfoot oil, I found literally dozens of varieties that vary by the types of other oils in their formula. I think that traditionally neatfoot oil is made from lard, but many manufacturers include other types of oil in it, too. So it is difficult...

Amazing number of patch lube recommendatons

I can't find too much about the chemical properties of mink oil. One paper mentions that most of it is actually skunk oil, which does not surprise me since the two species are in the same family of animals. However, I can't find anything that addresses the temperature tolerance of mink oil...

Amazing number of patch lube recommendatons

Yep! You are right on. Claude's post provided me with good input on this. Seasoning for an ML seems like an 'ol wives tale. I'm still lernin from you guys, even if I am an old dog.

Amazing number of patch lube recommendatons

Great insights!!!! It seems that there is always room for more learning. While I now see that seasoning a barrel is probably inappropriate, I still wonder about the need for a good lube oil.

Amazing number of patch lube recommendatons

Just like I've probably been stripping out the seasoning in my MO bore with a water/soap between shot cleaner, I think that others may be stripping out the seasoning with a petroleum based cleaner such as WD-40, Ballistol, brake fluid, and similar products. These products clean extremely well...

Amazing number of patch lube recommendatons

Another thought: I would never try to wash my mother's favorite iron skillet in soap and water because it would remove some of the "seasoning." That seasoning is the oil that permeates the grains for the iron, and gives it an extra measure of lubrication that actually seaps out of the...
