    Finally broke in my 54!

Great job. I am a spike fan. I always name him, Sir Francis Spikington. This year I pressure canned Sir Francis. Glad you got yours! Pete Davis in Virginia

    Rebarrel of CVA Mountain??

Deer Creek has the barrels-the Big Bore 54/58 are 1" across the flats. I think they still have the larger barrels but you have to call and ask.

    Rebarrel of CVA Mountain??

Well, he will. Just so long as you let him cut off that dang breechplug and rebreech that sucker! The .50's are 15/16ths. The .54's are 1". I think if you want a CVA 54 cal Mtn Rifle, you'll need to get one of them. I made mine when I lived on Chena Dome Rd in 1981. Pete Davis in VA

    Reboring 15/16ths Round Barrel

Yes but it doesn't hurt to prime the question here. The other issue he can answer would be the potential depth of the mounting holes for the sight and the breech threads. This barrel I am pretty sure is a clone of the New Englander and Grey Hawk barrels and he has bound to have done a few of...

    Reboring 15/16ths Round Barrel

Hello All Last year I used Bobby Hoyt to rebore and rebreech an older CVA Mtn Rifle barrel. He did a great job. I have in my possession, a T/C Tree Hawk with a .50 cal. barrel that measures 15/16ths OD. Is there enough metal in the barrel to allow a rebore to anything usable? I do not know...

    Need to Change Patch Material?

I hope your bore isn't pitted from corrosion. It can happen really easily. Over powder wads can help if that's the case. PD

    CONNECTICUT VALLEY ARMS (CVA)

The CVA Mountain Rifles are nice. I have two. One serious caveat:the BORE. Check it, check it, check it. Use a light and be picky. Nearly all of the MZ bores I see on old sidelock guns at gun shows are trashed. Most MZ owners let them get that way over time. A shredded patch makes good accuracy...

A little rust in the barrel a day after cleaning.

That kind of rust is invasive and over years will pit your bore-which is something I am surprised no one is mentioning. Look at any BP gun at a gun show. I wonder about a little JB paste to really clean the micro-pits left by machining that capture fouling. Clean, clean, clean!

    Harpers Ferry 1803 Rifle

Love to see some pics. The Corps of Discovery has a local connection to VA. I think there was another transitional rifle on the expedition. Or so Don Stith theorizes and makes a kit for. I'd live to have an 1803. PD

    new to forum and muzzleloading

Jim Kibler makes a kit that has most of the work done. Everything is CNC machined. Not cheap, but it is the next step beyond just in-the-white. You'd have to brown the metal and finish the wood. PD

    Va early MLer season

That's a really stout load. With 120 gr. 3F, are you using an over powder wad of any kind? PD

    Denim Patching

Is denim a popular patch material? I just took my Fiskars scissors and excluding the worn material at the front of an old pair of jeans, made a tremenduous amount of patching from a single pair. I go through a lot of jeans. PD

1981 CVA Big Bore .54 Refurbishments

Opinions vary, but once you take the sight down to 600/800 (automotive black sandpaper)you can use any cold blue. Brownells oxpho-blue is really durable as such products go. Just degrease with acetone first. PD
