    Scottish Highland Flintlock

Not sure who originally imported it, but it was manufactured by San Marco in Italy. I picked it up on Gunbroker.

    Scottish Highland Flintlock

At the Autry Museum of Western History. It was part of a 'Thank You' for a donation of ~25 Derringers manufactured in the San Francisco region in the mid 1800s.

    New Lyman Plains Pistol

You'll love shooting this one...very accurate, handles well. I would suggest .530s with some ticking or similar cloth from Joann's Fabrics...but .520s should work as well. Here's a little taste. Have fun.

    Derringer at 30 ft

Hmm, once again a lefty gets burned Actually, that's the reason I only shoot left-handed firearms...shot a right side flintlock once - lost a bit of the beard

    Derringer at 30 ft

As promised, the Derringer at 30ft. (for Oldbear63) The hole at 10 o'clock gets a little bit bigger

    Scottish Highland Flintlock

Just had to share. I'd been asked to give a presentation on Derringers and other small arms and have been wanting to get this guy out to the range in forever. Shot my Derringer (repro, .45cal, rifled) first but didn't video it (it's the hole on the second ring at 3 o'clock). Then I held my phone...

Is Hornady doing away with the .54 great plains bullet

I cast from a Lee .575 (Minie repro) and get a weight of ~33.9 - 34.5 grams (523.46 - 532.4 grains). I cast 10, take the average, and then stay within a close range of that weight. Out of my Kodiak .58 double barrel I range load about 55 grains of BP or Hodgkins (adjusting my sight picture...

    Percussion storage question?

Even when only stored for a little while I always place a folded bit of patch material between the hammer and nipple of my muzzleloaders. That way there's no tension on the spring and no chance of galvanic (bimetallic) corrosion between the two dissimilar metals being in contact.

    Goex v. Pyrodex v. Triple 7

    1. Triple 7 for the percussions 2. Goex for the flintlock Although sometimes, if I'm feeling homesick for the scent & sound, I'll load 'em all with Goex. Since I shoot a light load (47 grains) at the range, I don't bother changing the load when I switch from 777 to the true BP. But I do adjust...

    when is it clean enough?

My next roadtrip is going to be a north-south from LA to MN. I try to hit 3 - 4 outdoor ranges in each state per trip. I'll be sure to put Berryville on my list. There's usually some fixes to preservation issues in small museums that don't put a strain on their limited resources. Thanks for the...

    when is it clean enough?

I won't hazard a guess as to what the crud was but, speaking as a conservator at a museum with a nice collection of 19thC firearms, I try to dissuade anyone from believing that that 'long-term storage' equals 'long-term care'. I do an on-going, rotating inspection of the firearms here and have...

    GPR w/.533 Minie

I rarely carry muzzle down (too many years at the range...what am I saying, there's no such thing as too many years at the range) but I know what you mean. The lube I make for the conicals has a beeswax base that keeps it fairly snug in the barrel. I'm extra careful when I use conicals in the...

That's fascinating...and being the 'nerd' I am, I'm just gonna have to study this. Ah well, time well wasted. Thanks for the info.

FFF versus FF for Lyman GPR .54

I've only had my GPR .54 (lefty) for 8 months and I'm still working out all the kinks. This is my first flinter but I shoot FFF in all my percussions (.54, and .58) so I figured may as well stay with what I know. Going to open sights may be an issue here, but also be aware of the 'flinch'. Took...

    GPR w/.533 Minie

Nope. Bought it used off GunBroker...it's hard to find a lefty, so I snapped it up as soon as it became available.

    GPR w/.533 Minie

First time out with the new .533 Minies. 60 grains FFF (might bring that down to 50), lubed with beeswax/Crisco/canola oil mixture. Dead on at 50yds. Workin' on getting to 100 with consistency. Slow-mo shows the three stages. Flinter at night

    peep sight for Renegade

Thank you. Although I'll have to look into the breech to see. I may go with your second suggestion.

    peep sight for Renegade

Hey there, So, I've decided to go with a peep sight for the Renegade and I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with the Williamsâ„¢ FP-Hawken Peep Sight. There seem to be 2 models (1340 & 1342). Is there a difference? Oh, and does it matter that the Renegade is a lefty? Thanks in advance.
