    Jug choked barrels

So, I received a reply from Barbie today. She confirmed that my barrel is NOT jug choked. That service is only done on special order, like you said. So, I can only guess that Dane had his barrels jug choked for an extra fee...which as I had said in the beginning, is usually done after the sale...

    Jug choked barrels

No, I didn't specify my barrel be jug choked...and I swear when I loaded that patched roundball in, it was tight then, felt somewhat loose, then tightened up again...but when I held the barrel to the light, I couldn't discern a bending of light where I thought the jug choking should be...I can...

    Jug choked barrels

I think you may be correct...I tried a patched .690 roundball again in mine today. The first inch or so was tight, and as I slowly pushed it further, sure enough I felt a less snug spot in the barrel that felt like it went for two inches or so, then the ball got tighter again. I'll be damned...

    Jug choked barrels

Really? I put a tightly patched roundball down mine expecting to hit a somewhat loose spot...but never did...mine is 12 gauge though and that may be the difference...the paper that came with my kit mentions nothing of the barrel being choked...and after seating a .690 roundball with a .020 patch...

New to Traditional Muzzleloaders, and flintlocks

Guess I'll have to head back out that way and do some fishing. My gun build has gotten my full attention at the moment, so I'm not holding my breath.

Lock Bolt through Tang? Breech Plug distance to pan?

Almost forgot...the lock is a Chambers Colonial Virginia...one of their biggest locks I think.

Lock Bolt through Tang? Breech Plug distance to pan?

I did inspect the wood when I first got it. I assumed the small gouge was of no concern because I was going to be working that area anyway. It was only when I started to get the barrel set into the wood that I made this discovery as I was trying to make sure everything was lining up properly. I...

Lock Bolt through Tang? Breech Plug distance to pan?

Yes exactly...the center of the pan will be 1/4" from the breech face...ill try and inlet the lock as far back as allowable...but im not that far yet. I just wanted to make sure i wasnt painting myself into a corner, when i didnt lay out the plan...well good to know on both counts that i should...

Lock Bolt through Tang? Breech Plug distance to pan?

The fence...that's the rear of the pan that kicks up and just barely misses a released cock? Upon inspection of the pan... It does look like there is some meat on the rear side of it near the fence. Can this be removed some to allow for more movement fore or aft for better touch hole placement?

Lock Bolt through Tang? Breech Plug distance to pan?

This is my first build ever... So I really cant comment. But, I do wish they hadn't done either as well. I have a general idea of how things should look, as I held a built kit done by Mark Silver himself and talked with the chambers clan on how to build their guns in person. You can only gather...

Lock Bolt through Tang? Breech Plug distance to pan?

1/4" from the breech plug face...I laid it up on the barrel and marked it with fine permanent marker to show where the plug ended...so when I laid the pan up on the bolster to gauge where it was going to be for pan placement, I saw that it was that far forward of the breech plug face. As an...

Large Bore Fowler - Input and Thoughts?

I'm in the process of building the 12ga right now...its 46" swamped cylinder bore barrel goes on for ages...and for anyone's curiosity...YES, the barrel OD are the same for all gauges, and made by RAYL...the 10ga being the lightest. I handled a 11ga at the dixon's gunmakers fair, and it was...

    Jug choked barrels

The Rayl barrel in 12ga. I just received IS NOT jug choked...I researched this before buying mine, and it seems not many, if at all, offer this service. It must be done after the sale. I'm assuming because the maker doesn't know what kind of choke you need, so they allow for you to decide...

    1st Shots with the 17ga

Very nice fowling piece...I'm in love with any and all flintlock fowling guns...17ga? Didn't know such a gauge existed. Where did you get it from?

Where did I put that damn patch knife

Welcome...just joined myself...and wouldn't you know it..I'm from NY...I also did some military service for a short 7 year stint in the Army...Thanks for your service. We don't always get a lot of "Thank You", so here's mine :hatsoff:

    Blanket Gun ca1750

I'm rather new when it comes to flintlocks and the like...but weren't these guns of this era rather devoid of a "lever" and had a trigger in its place, with a trigger guard

Lock Bolt through Tang? Breech Plug distance to pan?

As some of you here know, I'm in the early stages of assembling/building a Chambers New England fowling piece. Today I spent an honest three hours slowly scraping black spots away from the wood...and something caught my curiosity. All Chambers kits are pre-inletted, and I noticed that where...

New to Traditional Muzzleloaders, and flintlocks

Yes certainly..I have a feeling that if I can complete a working gun...I'll need to see how it does with .690 roundball...so I guess I'll take on your invite, albeit with a span of time before I actually can go. Gotta get the gun done first...or in the white

New to Traditional Muzzleloaders, and the "parts set"

Yes...I drawfiled the barrel, and a breech was already installed and fitted I've removed the breech and have the bare barrel. I'm nearly square at the breech face to wood contact...the wood on my stock was pre-inlet 90% so I've not much choice as to where much goes, other than barrel depth...I...
