good powder load for a 40 cal

60 grains of 3F yields approximately 1900 ft. per second velocity, which according to J.L. Hargis, produces the best accuracy in most barrels. Mr. Hargis has held many NMLRA records at Friendship so I took his advice 35 years ago and found this load to be a second "sweet spot" for longer...

good powder load for a 40 cal

I have a .40 cal. Hawken with a 1"x34" Douglas barrel. I use a center hold. 45 grains of 3F, .400 ball and .015 pillow ticking will produce a ragged 1 hole group at 50 yards or less. At 100 yards, I increase the load to 60 grains to maintain the center hold point of impact. My last 50 score was...

    turnips

My wife is Chinese. She brought Chinese turnip seeds to me to plant in our garden. At harvest time, they looked like any other turnip to me. When I cut into them the inside was pink to red in color. The taste was like a spicy radish when eaten raw. Very nice.

    Throwing hawks

Any of you oldtimers heard of "Cricket" Hulvey? I believe some of the hawk matches on the Friendship Primitive range were named after him. His hawks were not HC, but they must have been good to throw. Thirty-five years ago, I visited with him at his home in Normal, IL. He told me he made them...

    custom hawken

Mainmechanic, I have three half-stock Hawken Rifles. The first two were built from unsold Sharon Rifle Co. kits. I purchased these Sharon parts from Charley Maggard in Phoenix around 1980. These parts sets consisted of the barrel, breechplug/tang, set trigger/guard, buttplate, toeplate...

    Gun cases for long guns

I have moved several times in the last few years and have had the same concerns about the lack of thickly padded gun cases in the 60" - 65" length. Note: Kibler's rifles with a 46" barrel must be at least 62" long and the Log Cabin cases are pretty thin for good protection. I have a 64"...

    Travel storage

I just moved myself, so I just went through this. Most of my soft side gun cases are too short and the padding is too thin for good protection so I wrap all of my rifle's gun cases with a 72"x80" HARBOR FRIEGHT moving blanket and use packing tape to hold everything together. I bought 6 moving...

    Bags with knifes attached

Stophel, I'm with you! I hate carrying things that flop around when I bend over or have to run. I guess that's why, after 35 years, I'm just now experimenting using a bag and horn. I am definitely left-handed, but I shoot right-handed (right eye dominant). I need the bag & horn on my left...

    Flintlock came in pieces.

Paul, It looks like your on your way with the flinter! I just started shooting flint this year myself. It can be a challenge but its great fun. I ran the shoots for the Muzzlestuffers for a year back in the 1980's. Rick & Barb Burton usually ran the matches but they took a couple of years...

    ML silhouette target templates

The Muzzlestuffers ML club in Mesa, AZ used .22 Cal. silhouette targets. 25 yd.-chicken, 50 yd.-pig, 75 yd.-turkey, 100 yd.-ram. Later we added a 1"x5" tall bolt at 15 yd. Five targets at each distance made up the match. After several years, many silhouette's feet had to be rewelded and the...

    .58 caliber HEAVY conicals???

Back in the late 1970's, one of our club members had a Morse boxlock .58 cal. After one match, he told us he and his dad made a mold of around 700 grains for a maxi-ball type bullet. He asked a couple of us if we wanted to try a shot. Being young and dumb we agreed to give it a try. WOW ...

    Long-rifle hard case

I just received my Impact guncase!!! It's long enough to hold two flintlocks with 44" barrels, 60" overall length. Mine came with wheels at the $389 price. It's high quality and worth the price to protect $8000 worth of rifles.

    CVA Mt. Rifle

I bought my CVA Mountain Rifle kit at the Thrifty Drug store in Tempe, AZ around 1978 for less than $130. It was very accurate, good enough for me to win the final shoot-off at the Muzzlestuffer's Annual Rendezvous. HOWEVER, watch the drum for gas leakage! I ended up sending my barrel back to...

ball and patch for .40 caliber

I built a .40 cal. Hawken in 1982. It has a 1"x34" Douglas barrel. My best groups at 50 yards or less are based on using a .400 ball (from a double cavity Lyman mold) 45 grains of GOEX 3F, .015 pillow ticking, and Hoppes #9 or Shendoah liquid lube. My son and I have shot several 50-3x off the...

How do you shoot open sights w bifocals? Your experiences?

I am 67 and have the same problems most of you are describing. My Hawken has the rear sight positioned 8" in front of the breech, which was fine when I was in my 30's. Now everything is blurry, so I used the old trick of punching a 1/16th" hole in a small piece of electrician's tape and found...

I used the toilet bowl wax ring to flux the lead in my pot while casting balls. Seemed do the job for me.

    powder drum not sealed

I had a CVA Mountain Rifle back in the 70's that developed a leaky drum. I tried brazing the drum to the barrel, but by the time I filed the brazing so the lock fit properly it would soon leak again. I returned the barrel to CVA and they sent me a new barrel. I turned around and traded it in...

How heavy are your custom Off Hand match guns

My Hawken weighs 10 1/2 pounds. It has a .40 cal. by 1"x34" Douglas barrel. I have shot several 50's @ 50 yards x-sticks and offhand. At Friendship, I shot a 48-3x on the 6-bull @ 50 yards offhand. The rifle holds extremely well.
