    T.C.Hawken Shooting High

I stay away from bars that have frayed shirt cuffs.

    T.C.Hawken Shooting High

That's what I intend to do. I will report back what I find. I started out about 4 inches high at 50 yards; a tighter ball/patch combination brought down to the top of the bead on the sight. Same powder charge, I don't know which had the higher velocity. If I go much tighter on the ball/patch...

    T.C.Hawken Shooting High

Did you have the same point of impact for each charge, 60 through 90?

    T.C.Hawken Shooting High

Well, next trip to the range, I'll up the charge to 80 grains, see where it hits, and report back. Inquiring minds want to know...

    T.C.Hawken Shooting High

That's what I thought, too, but stubshaft said more powder would mean higher velocity and the higher velocity would push the ball out before the barrel rose as far in recoil. Of course, more powder = more recoil, so which would win - barrel rise from recoil or barrel exit from speed? Anyway, I'm...

The barrel lays easily in the stock and the key can be installed and removed with easy finger pressure.

Did you try increasing the powder charge? I've been told that will lower the point of impact.

    T.C.Hawken Shooting High

Thanks for the information. I will be primarily shooting off hand or without a rest from a bench. Sounds like I'm doing the right thing. I will, or course, alter my technique if I go to bench rest competition.

    T.C.Hawken Shooting High

Thanks to everybody for their input. With my left elbow on the table, I am quite steady. I hold the fore end rather than let the rifle go to free recoil because I believe that will more closely approximate the point of impact I will get when shooting without the bags. If I was going for...

    T.C.Hawken Shooting High

OK, I shoot from a concrete bench at our local club range. I put a 4x4 inch block on the bench and a sand bag on top of the block. I grip the fore stock about 6-8 inches back from the fore cap and rest my hand on the sand bag. I shoulder the stock and rest my right elbow on the bench. It is a...

Got back to the range... I am swabbing between shots with a dry patch wrapped around a .45 cal. brass brush. I am using a tighter patch. With this technique, the loading effort stays constant, so I think I have the same level of fouling for each shot. Point of impact is at the top of the front...

    Frosty Barrel

Thanks. I guess my swabbing patches have been too wet; I've had to pull a couple of balls. 40 years ago (the last time I shot black powder) we'd just put the G.I. cleaning patches in our mouth for a couple of seconds before swabbing but no one seems to be doing that anymore. I'll try the paste...

    Frosty Barrel

OK, so the patch/jag combination should be loose enough to slip down a fouled bore easily and, then, jam-up a little to pull the fouling out. I assume this would be for swabbing between shots and for cleaning. Should the swabbing-between-shots patch be dry, damp, or wet, followed by a dry patch...

    Frosty Barrel

The patch isn't that tight going in. What do I do about a rough bore? The gun is T.C, Hawken with the stock sights; it shouldn't need new sights.

    Frosty Barrel

I forgot to mention, I'm shooting Goex FFFg powder with a .440 patched ball.

    Frosty Barrel

I have cleaned it with moose milk (2 parts ballistol, 2 parts pine sol, and 22 parts water) and oiled it with WD-40. I have also used hot soapy water and oiled with ballistol. The last cleaning was hot water pumped until it came out clear, followed by moose milk patches until they came out...

    Frosty Barrel

No matter how I clean my old TC Hawken, it seems to have frosty looking deposits in the grooves. Is this normal? What could the deposits be?

    T.C.Hawken Shooting High

Let's see if I understand the reasoning... With 40 and 60 grains, the barrel rises enough under recoil to make it hit high at 50 yards. A larger powder charge would move the ball out of the barrel sooner; before the muzzle rise made it hit unusually high. Is that it?

    T.C.Hawken Shooting High

Tokk my .45 Hawken to the range (with a new hot shot nipple) and was confused. The first three shots were 4 1/2 inches high and 3 inches left at 50 yards. No problem; I adjusted the sights. The sight bottomed out for elevation after three clicks. The windage didn't seem to have clicks, but I...

    Shooting a T/C .45 Hawken

The hot shot nipple arrived today and the hole was about 1/3 the size of the one I took out. I'll get to the range early next week. Looking forward to it!
