My newest 1803 Harper’s Ferry (sporter)

It's been pretty well established that Lewis had 15 of these guns, prototypes, made to take with him on the Corps Of Discovery. Two of the originals have been found, the first being number 15 and in the St Louis area where the Corps auctioned off everything when they returned. Flint locks of...

    Load Data for my Cannon

Notwithstanding those are not maximum loads, that chart indicates a MUCH lighter load than they show here: http://www.americanartillery.org/aaa/marty.html Ten Basic Safety Regulations Powder charges should not exceed 2 oz. of Fg or 3 oz. FFA or Cannon Grade Goex powder per inch of bore...

    Percussion Rifles Beginning?

Has anyone ever seen evidence, possibly gleaned from diaries, letters, etc. of any percussion arms being used at the Alamo?

    Percussion Rifles Beginning?

A central fire cartridge had the primer on the inside of the base and in the center of the base where the firing pin hit just as with the centerfire. There was no visible sign of it on the outside of the base, the base on the outside being smooth and continuous. When they started making...

    Percussion Rifles Beginning?

Just a note: Between the rimfire and the centerfire was the centralfire.

It was probably an improvement over the Halls design, which leaked so bad at the breech that the muzzle velocity/energy was severly compromised.

    Newbie with serious issue

I checked to make sure the ball was down all the way on whatever it was on. The little bit of powder I could get in through the nipple orifice I knew wouldn't have overcharged it. So there ya go.

Minie Bullet advice - .58 cal Musket Newbie

I used a 50/50 mix of melted parafin wax and lithium grease. I dipped the mini-ball nose first in, to just depth of the edge of the base. Pulled them out and set them to cool.

    Newbie with serious issue

About 30 years ago I had an interesting occurrence. I was working the midnight ride in the Locomotive Shop. My foreman was a half-assed gunsmith and we had talked guns from time to time, so he knew I was into muzzleloading. Well, someone brought a .50 cal Hawken to him one day telling him...

    small cannons

My only cannon, I built in 1968 or 69, is a 1.0" bore with a 30" bbl. I made molds for it and the cast lead ball is around 1200 grns (calculated). I use around 300-350 grns of Fg and a greased patch. It's a pee-bringer. I have had another bbl of 2" bore for all these years but have never...

Shot my .58 caliber for the first time

What I've used in my Hawken for patches, with good results through the years, are regular ol' Brite-Bore cleaning patches which mic at .015, Lubed with either vaseline or Hodgdon's Spit Patch. .490 RB.

    First muzzleloader

That sure'nuff is a great looking rifle!! Beautiful wood. I've always remembered buying my .50 Hawken in 1969 (ser # 2***), but research indicates TC didn't start making them until 1970. Anyway it was my first and I still have it.
