    Stuck nipple

This is a common problem - particularly with some Italian reproductions. Next time, go to a hardware store and buy an easy-out of the appropriate size. Works every time.

    Nipples tighten up?

I have experienced nipples that tighten up after firing, over time. I can't explain why this happens, but I seem to recall others commenting similarly. Can anybody explain this? Now, every time I clean a percussion firearm, I remove and clean the nipples, and coat the threads with anti-seize...

Why I Use a Steel Range Rod

At the range, I remove the gun's ramrod. Otherwise, the tip gets fouled from the discharge from the barrel and the wooden rod itself gets stained. I use a steel range rod. Not sure what others do.

    Strength of Brass Lock plate

I wonder if the tiger stripes are hand-painted or stained rather than the natural maple? I'm slightly suspicious.

    Sprue up or down?

I don't cast my own balls. I use Hornaday swaged lead balls - no sprue and very precise size.

    Traditions Crockett Rifle

I have one. Good squirrel rifle. Double set trigger - and the gun looks good!

    Pilgrim guns

The pilgrims originally departed from Holland - where they lived for several years after decamping from England.

TVM - Tenn Valley ML - Question

I have a TVM Early Lancaster with the plain stock. It, to my eye, is very pretty, and I shoot it and display it. I've read that heavily striped maple may be weaker than regular wood?

Is it not cricket to have a Craftsman toolbox as a shooter's

I use a large, plastic, Plano fishing tackle box from Walmart, with trays, boxes, compartments, and fold-open sides. The latch on one of the sides is busted, so I keep it shut with a bungee cord.

a couple of comments on my new New Army

Replace the nipples. I do it with every Italian repro.

    Natural Tinder Bundle

Years ago, I used strands of bark from eastern red-cedar trees, which grow wild along roads and highways in the Midwest.

    Fiberglass ramrod for Pedersoli Jaeger

I don't like either fiberglass or delrin ramrods. I only use steel range-type rods with a large wooden handle. I consider my wooden rods as mainly decorative, and I remove them when firing to avoid caking the tip with powder residue. Carrying a steel range rod when still hunting might be a bit...

    Pietta Uberti nipples

The first thing I do with an Italian reproduction revolver is to replace the nipples - they are often for #10 caps and cheapos. And, particularly for Uberti, the nipples are often way over-tightened. Get them off while you can. Keep anti-seize lube on the threads.

    Replica Arms Inc Paterson.

If you remove the 4-sided Uberti nipples, you should be able to replace them with 2-sided? If you can't remove the original nipples, use an easy-out.

    Dimpled balls again

My understanding is that dimples on a golf ball trip the aerodynamic boundary layer, causing the ball to travel with turbulent air flow around it (instead of laminar). The transition between laminar and turbulent flow is governed by the Reynold's number (Google it). With a smooth golf ball, the...

    New barrel protectant

Alde is something else. I would ignore him in favor of the many satisfied TVM customers including me. He obviously has a major burr under his saddle, but we don't know what it is. Maybe a personal vendetta of some sort? A year or two ago, I bought an early Lancaster flint-lock. Beautiful...

    Cleanest burning bp?

I have used several brands of black powder - couldn't tell any difference in dirtiness. But, whatever, they all cleaned up after firing.

    Mutton Tallow?

Many farmers will tell you: sheep and goats are two of the few animals that stink before they're dead. :(

    Round vs Conical

I have an original M1863 .58-cal Springfield, civil war era rifled musket. Minie balls (conicals) were standard issue, but I've fired both Minie and round balls. Both are fun to shoot, but I tend to go with Minies. I haven't carefully compared their accuracy and I don't use the musket for...

    Hello from Wales...

I traveled a little bit sightseeing in Wales (which was pretty). I learned painfully that, unlike in the U.S., using "Welch" as a verb is considered very politically incorrect, or worse. Jeez! All I did was ask somebody what the derivation was of that common American expression :v
