    Tow, where to get it.

I was talking about wadding and cleaning. I have tried it for firestarting and got it to work, but not with similar results to tow.

    parched corn question

Good points. I have seen various comments elsewhere and in videos where they use dehydrated sweet corn for this. IMHO that isn't at all what they describe from back in the day.

    Tow, where to get it.

Baler twine. Good point...I've done the same with the natural looking twine. Not sure if I'd trust the newer green and reddish orange twines though. It would be my luck they contain something corrosive, etc. As for tow, I always pick it up at the market fairs. Maybe a bit more expensive, but I...

    Turned powder horn plugs

First of all , thanks to all of you guys for your input. Yes, I've seen some of Dick Toone's videos, but never got to actually see the lathe in action. Couldn't get to Schoenbrunn this past October...I heard he had it there. His lathe is sort of the inspiration for my question. Again, :bow...

    Turned powder horn plugs

Okay, so sandpaper was invented in 1834. Does anyone know how the early powder horns with turned plugs...presumably made on a pole lathe...attained such a smooth, sand paper-like finish? I understand old timers used scrapers on gun stocks, but can't see how that would work on many of the plugs...

Tip Curtis Dubbs Fowler in Slow Mo

Skychief, Sorry it took so long to get back...Tip told me it's an R.E. Davis Lg. Siler. He added he'd tweaked it to speed it up a bit...not sure exactly what he did. Davis's website shows these locks are made from Chambers' parts.

Tip Curtis Dubbs Fowler in Slow Mo

I bought that gun from Tip with the 16 ga. Barrel. I've had too many flinters over the years and it has the best ignition I've ever owned...and has made quite a difference. Thanks for sharing the video.

    1750ish Virginia Pole Axe

Thanks for the replies. I got thru to RE Davis today and confirmed they are still made by Larry Zornes. This not being written out, I wasn't certain this was the case. I have one now that has that @#@#@#@ five letter word stamped on it that wouldn't have found its way to my kit had I been wise...

    1750ish Virginia Pole Axe

Anyone have any experiences (good or bad) with the Va. Pole Axe being offered by R E Davis? This axe has the style and size I'm looking for, but.... (????) I'm actually wondering about its price being so little! Matt Wulff posted on his dispatch a couple years ago that he was trying one, but I...

    Mark Baker DVDs

I have all five. They're well worth the investment. The last one is the better quality video from a filming standpoint. Coincidentally, I just picked up his book , Sons of a Trackless Forest today! Something I've been attempting to find for years. Picked it up for a Benjamin, which...

    Spring Turkey Season and Limit?

This is finally "Spring Gobbler Eve" here in PA!!!! Our season opens May 2nd thru 30th. You can take two bearded birds if you purchase the extra tag prior to opening day. Of course, the season actually began last Saturday-only for the youth. We have to quit at noon for the first part of the...

The Sound of Silence - MN Turkey

Well done, Spikebuck. Jake or not....IMHO...any bearded bird is a trophy when taken with a flinter. I had four beards within ten paces on this morning's scout(Tom, 2 Jakes and a bearded hen), but as already stated, our season opens Saturday. I hope to share in your good fortune.

    turkey calls

Sorry if I'm repeating this. I didn't read thru all the posts, but don't forget the use of the wing and scratching. If you get a tough tom two of the easiest things I've found to seal the deal is a wing to mimic a fly down to a roosted bird or simply some scraping against brush, etc., and...

    Pa Flintlock Season?

This does bear out a great need for the rock lock hunter to continuously check the PGC's current regs. That first flintlock-only year (1974) was much different than it is today. Let us hope they haven't gotten that technical. I mean, as far as I know, none of the original guns had coil springs...

How bad does the roundball deflect on brush?

All I've got for this one is that on more than one occasion I've still hunted into areas with bedded deer that "appeared" to be in the open. Only to fire and, literally, hear the PRB bouncing through the forest as the deer flagged off laughing at me! My two "most memorable deflections" were two...

    Pa Flintlock Season?

If that's their intention (1800), I agree it might as well read full stocked gun. I don't know when they changed it to read ...1800, but it USED TO BE "prior to 1840." I have never heard of anyone wishing to tote their TC Hawken being spoken to by a warden. There was a time when, technically...
