    affordable matchlock

Try Leonard Day. His matchlock is .62 smooth with a trigger, trigger guard and fishtail stock. $825 assembled, and $545 kit price. His kits are mostly inlet, and need slimming down on the forearm, etc. Parts are as good as anyone's, and the walnut stock is standard. Barrels are from Shaw in...

    Red Spots on Patch?

That shows up when I use a spit patch.

    .54/28ga tradegun/fowler

I built a 28g Fusil De Chasse from the Mold & Gun Shop. 41" barrel, stout breech, so it is about 8# finished. I don't get much practice shooting, but even so I feel it is plenty accurate for a smoothie. I hit a gong once at 100yds. The rest of that match I hit about 50% of the targets...

    chambers fowlers

I have the English Fowler. Plain Cherry wood with a Cherry stain finish. Brass hardware. 20g. Carved similar to the guns on p.178-179 in Flintlock Fowlers by Grinslade. I even put in a small palm swell by the entry thimble. It looks better than I can shoot it. :headslap: Oh well, at least I...

    TOW Tvlle kit

Alex- Yes, the new Track FdC lock has the internals of the Chambers English /Colonial lock - sturdy. I have one in front of me on the desk. It's the best commercial copy (realistically) available, barring the one from TRS. The only thing that I notice right away is the frizzen spring. The...

    TOW Tvlle kit

Alex- So who is using the correct profile? Names please. Is that barrel profile or barrel and stock profile. From what I've seen, the stock profile can vary quite a bit, especially over time. I have built two FdCs and am thinking about a third, the idea being they get more correct as I go...

    Building a fusil class d

Tin Star You're right. The 28g is slightly heavier. Mine weighs 8# 1oz. on a 25# kitchen scale. My other Fusil de Chasse weighs 7# 6 oz. It has a 20g, 44" barrel and is a kit from Track, so the barrel profiles are not the same. At the touch hole, the 20g from Track is 1.058". The Mold &...

    apartments = BP

Years ago when I didn't want to put out for a full can of 4f, I made some of my own. I took 3f and crushed it in a tablespoon. Using just a few granules at a time, I worked it down to a black flour. If I worked it too hard, it exploded. Of course it surprised me, so I used less pressure...

    Building a fusil class d

For what it's worth, I built a Mold & Gun Shop Fusil de Chasse in 28g smooth. It is one of my favorites and more accurate than I can shoot. I hit a gong once with it at 95 yds. Your results may vary. I use a .530 ball. Larry Zorn was really good to work with. Hope this helps. John

How do you store Black Powder at home?

I store it in the bottom drawers of the fridge. It's a constant climate all year round. Just make sure the caps are tight on the cans. My fixed ammo is in there too. I don't know how safe it all would be in a fire, but I figure it's much better than open storage in a cabinet. John

    Finding the right wads.

If you haven't found out already, Track of the Wolf sells just about every size card/wad there is. A call would get things straightened out. John

    flint kit

Yes, I got a Jaeger kit from Sitting Fox. The parts were as nice as from anywhere else. The barrel came from one source (don't remember), and the rest came from the Mold & Gun Shop. I called SF and ordered a .62 barrel and was glad I did. The balance is just amazing! Someone else in our...

Scottish Long Gun by Gulielmus Smith

Very nice. Is this strictly a Scottish style, or does it have other influences? Does anyone else see a strong overall resemblance to later Colonial/American rifles? I don't know what school it may be closest to, but it looks familiar. You (or someone) mentioned the Scots brought over their...

Naval carriage for an 1812 barrel

Great looking carriage. Do you make them for others ? I have a naval barrel that needs one. It is about 28" long with a 1 1/2" bore and trunnions. It looks to me like your work is in that size range or could be. John

    1750s Men's Cloak Pattern/dying wool

I have used Rit dye on canvas pants and everything came out fine. Then they faded in the wash. Some one told me I needed to put a mourdant in with it to fix the dye. I don't remember what, but somebody out there knows. Maybe try looking up Rit dye in the web. Good luck. John

    snaphaunce kits

Buzz- I am building the same gun that Ricky has in the photos, from Leonard Day in kit form. He has 6 different models, all from the 1620-1660 era. He makes his own locks, but none are snaphaunce. Early English flintlock and Dutch flintlock of 4 models, plus a matchlock. Locks are $195...

    Enlarging Touch Hole

I drill my touch holes at about .068-.070 - the drill wobbles or it's me. Any bigger than that and my 2F powder would probably come out into the pan, which I don't want. Picking is easier and accuracy doesn't seem to be affected. John

    Fire safe for powder storage.

I store mine in the bottom of the fridge, in the veggie bins. It is at a cool, constant temperature all year.

    Snaphaunce era Weaponry

Ricky, What a great idea to upgrade the Rifle Shoppe business capacity. It's been needed for years! Although these older styles may be a small niche market in the overall gun industry, I'm sure it could be a lot bigger - if only they were available. Pretty simple. People crave variety and...

    Barrel and lock polishing

Good advice on draw filing. I agree not to go too smooth if you want to brown or blue a part. I finish most of my guns bright and let them dull down on their own. Depending on the situation (part size, metal type) I use flat single cut files of 4",6",8" or 10". A 4" or 6" triangle also works...
