    early short starter

Wow, great link. I just started reading it. I've been on the fence, 'cause I like short starters. But man, if the military manuals don't mention it, (in triplicate, with carbons, by number...) I find it very hard to believe it existed.

    photos of your jaegers please

Here's a repost from a few years ago: Here is mine: This was the last gun my Dad made. He called it the 'Family Rifle'. The cheekpiece is our family crest. The edelweiss on the butt is a brooch from my Mother's side of the family. This one is a keeper.

    "Do" try this at home............

Okay, I'll play. First is a 80's era Chambers flintlock made by Walter Cain. Still my main rifle. Next is a Traditions rifle I just put together for my son. The frizzen spring was installed wrong, I corrected it. Other than that, no changes to the lock. Of course, the reflex...

    My son's first flintlock

I thought of the rawhide, but not using it as a tool holder. Now I like that... :)

    First BP shot

Welcome! There is no turning back now... I use Ballistol for lube, cleaning, aftershave... On long woods walks when traveling light and loading right before firing I use spit lube. For cleaning, nothing but hot water and patches, never a problem...

    My son's first flintlock

So I haven't posted in awhile, but I'm still around. My son turned 10 this year. He's been shooting a .45 underhammer for a couple years (my first rifle), but we really wanted a flintlock for him. I found a company that still had some of the Traditions Kentucky rifle kits in stock. After...

    peening knife haft

They are, the Ticonderoga blade. He delivered fast and they are good quality. I will order more.

    peening knife haft

Well, it kinda worked. The top one is my first try. I must not have heated it enough times, I never got it to peen. So I trimmed it off short, stuck a pin through it, then cast a 'pewter' cap over it. The second time I followed instructions more closely. Filing the end cap to fit the...

    Ram Rod Issues

[/url] Tsegoweleh, you beat me to it. I have 2 of his rods, custom measured to my specifications. I no longer carry a separate range rod. With both ends threaded, I carry a t-handle and all the fittings in my pouch. Not sure if he still advertises here on the forum, it's where I found him...

    peening knife haft

Sorry, guess I did forget a lot. It is a purchased blade, I thought it was annealed. Now I think otherwise. I am going through a plate. Hadn't thought about beveling the edges, I'll try that and the heating. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't way off base by sticking it in a vise.

    peening knife haft

I'm attempting my first knife project. Without a forge and a ton of knowledge, how can I best peen the haft? I clamped it in a vise with the tip resting on really soft wood and pounded the bejeezus out of it without accomplish anything.

    Kids activities?

We've done a "save the Concord powder" relay race. Got some black sand from the local arts&crafts store, had full horns on one side, empty jars on the other. Kids had to move the powder from one side to the other (field as long as you want) using spoons only.

    Family at Fort Mac

Old Fort MacArthur Days is a timeline event held each year in San Pedro, CA. It's a fun change to set up with Hussars on one side and Romans on the other. The family joined me again for this event. This was my 14-month old daughter's second time at Fort Mac, her first repeat. Quite a...

    RamRod Breakage???

I believe they're called "practically indestructible ramrods" No, wait, it's virtually indestructible ramrods I've seen him as an advertiser on this forum for a long time, and I'm a satisfied customer. After I broke the custom tapered ramrod on my rifle, I bought one of his rods. It fit...

    glass leather covered canteen

This was probably the first project I ever did. I cut a pattern from brown paper first, wet the leather, and sewed it up as tight as I could. When it dried it formed to the bottle nicely. Still my favorite canteen.

    flash guard installation

That's what I did (not super glue). Found a longer screw that would work. The head didn't fit the hole, but I filed it down. It looks ugly but keeps me legal.

    snow camp

That rolled-up bundle of canvas on the right is my fly. 40 mph winds had been forecast for the night before, so I took the fly down. We did end up with 20 mph winds, not 40. This was also tear-down day for us. Packed everything up, drove home, and set the tent back up at 80 degrees in my...
