Rear Sight on Lyman GPR is loose

Cowboy, Definitely sounds better than altering the dovetail so that no other size sight would fit. I'll get on this tomorrow morning. Thanks a lot, joliver

Rear Sight on Lyman GPR is loose

I just took my Lyman GPR out of storage after many years and found that the rear sight is so loose in the dovetail that I can easily slid it back and forth with my fingers. I haven't sighted it in yet, so I don't want to use any LocTite on it. Recommendations? Thanks for any suggestions...

    what oil to use?

I haven't fired my Lyman .54 cal GPR in about 5 years. Before I put it away I gave it a good cleaning and put a heavy coat of Bore Butter in the bore. Took it out of the closet today and ran a few patches through it and there was not a speck of rust! Needless to say, I'm a BB fan... joliver

    what oil to use?

I haven't fired my Lyman .54 cal GPR in about five years. When I put it away, I cleaned it carefully, then coated the bore heavily with Bore Butter. Haven't checked it since then. But when I took it out of the closet today and ran a few patches down the bore, it was clean as a whistle--not a...

Cleaning Patch Size for .54 caliber

Billnpatti, Thanks for your help. When I cleaned my rifle the other day I used my few remaining 3x3 patches and they were a snug fit, but O.K. As far as shooting patches go, I've always used the pre-cut ones. However, when I get started this time, I may use a strip of pillow ticking...

Cleaning Patch Size for .54 caliber

I'm just getting back into muzzleloading after a few years' absence, so I've got a bunch of things to relearn. First, what size cleaning patches are correct for a .54 rifle--2 1/2" x 2 1/2" or 3" x 3"? I only had a few left over from years ago and they were all 3 x 3, but most suppliers...

Prefer drum instead of patent breech?

I don't know which one shoots more reliably, but I sure don't like having to clean out the patent breech on my Lyman GPR. Which manufacturers make a reliable Hawken-style rifle with a drum instead of a patent breech? joliver

    Lehigh Valley Lube?

Is it true that you can only use the synthetic whale oil on guns that have synthetic stocks? :hmm: Pork Chop, Again, I'm surprised that a poster on this forum wouldn't know the answer to this. Of course you can't use it on guns that have synthetic stocks--only on guns that have synthetic...

    Lehigh Valley Lube?

Greenmtnboy, Yep, I've heard good things about Ballistol. Have you ever tried Eezox? It's non-petroleum based and supposed to be an excellent rust preventative. How about Dixie Gun Works Synthetic Sperm Whale Oil? Joliver

    Lehigh Valley Lube?

Woops, sorry, guess I didn't make it clear what I was looking for. Not looking for a patch lube, or a range or field lube, what I'm looking for is a non-petroleum based bore lube for long-term storage, say several weeks or months. joliver

    Lehigh Valley Lube?

I'm just getting back into muzzleloading and was wondering if Lehigh Valley Lube is still available? If not, which of the following is the best long-term bore lube: Ballistol, Eezox, or Breakfree CLP? I'm particulary looking for a non-petroleum based lube. joliver

Fouling Scraper with a Rounded Bottom

Birddog6, The answer Semisane got from Lyman about the patent breech in his rifle said the patent breech is .35 cal. Is this the modern .357 cal? In your reply you said I need a .36 cal scraper for the patent breech. Is this the same .36 cal as the old .36 caliber revolvers, e.g., Colt 1851...
