    Garage Sale Find!!!

At a garage sale today I found and purchased a percussion pistol, marked NORBERTO ARIZMENDI EIBAR MADE IN SPAIN. Barrel about 9-3/8 inches. Also marked 12 m/m. Appears unfired; the nipple has very slight peening from dry firing. Lots of rust in the barrel but seems to be a smoothbore, and the...

    Flashes in the pan?

I have been shooting my Cabelas' .54 Hawken Flinter (Investarms) off and on at the range for nineteen years or so with generally good results. Today I had the worst run of flashes in the pan. Just about every other shot out of ten. I swabbed the bore clean before I began, and also damp patch and...

Wedge Key - insert from left or right?

With my Investarms (Cabelas) Hawken flinter I have always inserted the wedge key from the left side, like you would a sight in a dovetail. However, found my manual from 17 years ago and it says to insert the wedge key from the right to the left! Which is correct? Tom

    Frizzen question

Hello - at a gun show I bought a .45-cal flinter. Price was right (maybe). Guy said it was hard to get it to spark. It is a "DART", made in Italy, from the markings. Lots of reasons it wouldn't spark. 1 - Lock wouldn't let the hammer fall completely; 2 - lock was rubbing against the wood in the...

CVA .45 kit rifle - max load?

Hello - I built a CVA percussion rifle, "Kentucky" model with full stock, no patch box, from a kit several years ago. The CVA literature dated 1981 which came with the gun "recommends" a charge of 75 gr of 3F powder. Fadala's BP book shows and recommends hunting loads up to 120 gr of 3F with...

    lost barrel wedge

This winter's Minnesota muzzle-loader deer season I took my Cabelas' Hawken .54 flinter out for several days of still-hunting over a three-week period. Left the charge in the barrel throughout, just emptied the pan after each hunt. After the last day I shot out the charge, took the gun into the...

    Percussion O/U Question

My dad called this firearm "his father's gun". Grandpa was a German immigrant who came to the US in 1888; he was a butcher. The gun is an O/U percussion, rifle on top, about .45 caliber, with a 12- or 14-gauge shotgun barrel on the bottom. Looks like back-action sidelock mechanism. No makers'...

    Hello from Minnesota!

Hi Fellas! Glad to be a part of this forum. I'll read a lot, probably post a little, as I'm learning a lot about BP. I bought a Cabelas' .54 Hawken flinter when I retired nine years ago, and am having a great time with it. It'll put three holes touching at 50 yards with 100 grains of 2F under...
