What do you name your smoothbore's

My New England fowler I call "Slim Jane". My wife's Indian name is "Wa She Be Non". Translated in English it means "She Who Must Be Obeyed".

Flintlock guns with no vent liners

I haven't been on this forum as of late. Trying to get caught up. I find it interesting that the original post here has to do with not using a touch hole liner, just a hole thru the barrel. I was involved with a similar discussion years ago and I am afraid that I upset more then a few folks...

    Longrifle sling

I was fortunate for having the opportunity to go to the Contemporary Longrifle Association Annual Show and Meeting in August. There was much to take in and was able to see many builders and vendors advertised in a magazine I get. I was even able to meet and have a conversation with Hershel...

    20 ga English fowler

'Tis a nice looking gun. I have a somewhat similar fowler where I used the same trigger guard and butt plate. Except I rounded the toe of the butt plate and didn't use a toe plate. I think that would make it more of a Virginia fowler.

T/C Renegade To Indian Trade Rifle

Here is the rifle I'm modeling it after. It is a shortened Leman's rifle. The one I'm building won't be exactly the same. Hook breech, different brass furniture (but similar).

T/C Renegade To Indian Trade Rifle

Looks like these rifles, only shorter. Only has two ramrod pipes. I'm going to have to learn to post pictures as I haven't posted on this sight for 5 years. Thanks for your response.

T/C Renegade To Indian Trade Rifle

I recently got a closet Thompson Center Renegade in 54 caliber. It had surface rust and the stock was beat up. After cleaning up the metal and giving a good going over I decided to get rid of the stock, trigger, and trigger guard and make a short Indian Trade/Plains rifle out of it. I found a...

    Left Handed Shooter

I've been shooting flintlocks since the 80's and had never considered shooting a right-handed flinter left-handed. I built a left handed rifle and then a fowler. The few people that have shot my lefties I always made them shoot left-handed. This thread has made me re-consider this issue as I am...

    Not that far off!

Archery season isn't for another 3 months in Illinois. Need to get practicing. Muzzleloader season isn't until December. I prefer the cold and snow, but people are building homes too close to where I hunt and limits where I can stand. And I lost my touch. Went a few years with getting a deer...

    Is it a Renegade ?

The Renegade I bought in '82 does say Renegade on the side of the barrel. Still an excellent rifle.

    .54 Renegade loading hard.

My nephew went with me over the weekend to a local gun show. He found a Renegade in 54 for $135 in fair condition. He also bought some maxiballs in unmarked bags marked 54. They loaded way to hard and we decided not to get one stuck. We tried one of my maxiballs in it and it went down good...

    .54 Renegade loading hard.

Going from memory, I obtained a 54 cal Renegade in 1982. My son uses it now. But...the rifling is very shallow as it was also set up for the Thompson Center MaxiBall. And the rifling is pretty quick, 1 turn in 48". I used the Thompson Center patches, .530 balls and lube. Very, very tight combo...

    Just Curious

Necchi is right. The salt is used to recharge the resin bed for ion exchange. It goes through a rinse cylcle when it is done. I have my own well, also. It doesn't have chlorine or fluoride added to it like city water would.

    "Hog" Rifle

Sorry about your family's loss. I will have to admit that I built what I thought was a fairly accurate southern mountain rifle that was finished in 1989. There wasn't much to go on at my disposal for research at the time. And I was limited to being left handed along with few corresponding...

    Historically Correct Builds

The very first post on this thread started the stirring of the pot. A few people added some more ingredients. I just wanted a chance to stir seeing that a "skin" was developing on top of the brew and necessitated further stirring. It should be pretty tasty when finished.

    Historically Correct Builds

Maybe hc/pc stands for a lot of hocus/pocus. It would be very hard to do and labor intensive causing the build to be very expensive. But, alas, I'm "preaching to the choir". Now outhouses, that's a subject I can speak on. I aced my operator's test for the sanitary sewer system at the place I...

    Yay..........or Nay?

The arrowhead looks great. Whether or not it was ever done is another question. There sure were arrowheads back in the day. Traditional or not, I believe it's more exceptable than a stainless steel touch hole liner with a screw driver slot on this type of rifle. My humble opinion since you're...

    Is this historically correct?

I see you passed on this rifle. Back in the 80's and 90's this type of Tennessee/SM rifle with the Siler lock was kinda popular. We weren't as sophisticated and scholared as we now are. I'm not saying that a Germanic lock "never" happened, but it doesn't fit in todays norm and testimonies of...

    Hunting practices/preferences

During the hunting season I too keep the gun loaded and in a storage room out in the garage to keep it "in the elements". If I shoot it during the hunting season I also clean it. My season can last a month. So its not going to get shot/cleaned after each day of hunting.

    Flask or Horn?

For hunting situations I like using a flask for the main charge. It's smaller than my horn and fits in my shooting bag pretty well and makes for less entanglement going through brush. I've used a flask for priming with a springloaded spout. But sometimes I like a flattened horn for the priming...
