went hunting last night this boar came in at 12:35. I notice he had a real long snout, so I knew he was a older boar. boars only get a long snout when they get age on them, I estimated him at around 7 years. he doesn't have a lot of body weight on him for his age, that tells me he is still looking for sows to bread, so I imagine hes been running trying to catch up to the sows shot with my Hawken .54 90 grains of pyrodex P bullet was TC 430 maxiball. used a wonder over the powder

Good shot.
How far did this one go Howie?
How close were on this one?

B.
shot distance 12 yards he went a whopping 17 yards or so from all the smoke I couldn't see after the shot but I heard him drop and start thrashing. I use red lights to hunt at night, I have a head lamp on and I turn it on to the red light so I can see my open sights, that's how im able to take them open sighted at night. these lights I use are awesome. these lights have a elliptical lens which throws the light pattern about 49 yards wide and 30 yards long, These are the 9 watt version I have to set ups like that, I also have a light called the bowhunter special it is 2 watts and is good to 30 yards or so

Any more info on your lights? Are the incandescent or LED? I'd heard hogs react to LEDs but not incandescent. Can you share model of your headlamp?

How fun! I wish I lived somewhere close to hog hunting. Do you process your meat, or use a butcher?

-These are 9 watt red led made by Texas boars. the model I use is called the bowhunter. ive been using Kevins lights for almost 20 years and have killed hundreds of hogs with them. I have some models the older 2 watt that have dawn dusk sensors on them. I hog never knows im there I put them up a tree about 10 feet high and angle down. now ive got portable tripods. and when im going to a rempote location I have a 9 watt moundred to my summit goliath climbing stand. ill work on pictures

I process myseolf, processing for me is getting off the quarters back strap tenderloin and nexk meet. normally mine goes to smoke sausage. I generally kill at least 50 a year and some years 100 or more. ive got quite a few people that want hog meat so when I kill one the person who comes and gets it first gets it.

Led are much better the trick to using night hunting lights on hogs is to have them already on and elevated, you do not want the intensity of the light shining directly into the eyes. if you elevate the lights it will soften the light to them, and give you better coverage. I hunt at very close ranges 12-15 yards on the ground abnd in a ground blind. I do have a set up that im mobile and have a light mounted to a summit goliath climber. I use open sights at night paint the front sight white and use a head lamp that puts a dull red light on my sights. the hunting lights light up the hog, then I aim squeeze trigger and follow through wait 30 minutes and go find the hog

Great job Howie! Here in Arkansas they cry about hogs tearing up pasture and screwing up water sources etc., And they have an open season, but night hunting is prohibited, I guess they think we'll wake up the neighbors or shoot somebody's cat. I used to hunt rabbits and 'coons at night in another state, so it seems strange to me not to thin the problem during nocturnal hours. Maybe we could set up a mountain howitzer with grape shot pre aimed at a good location and remotely shoot the darlings using CCTV. That way, you could cull from the comfort of your own home and claim you were merely controlling perimeter defenses. If we lost our case in court a Presidential pardon may be in order since Mr. Trump has little sympathy with porous border security situations.

when it comes to hogs texas has become very lenient. recently you no longer have to have a license to hunt them. I give the local game warden a courtesy call or any new game wardens introduce myself, I tell them where ill be hunting and tell them they are more than welcome to check on me. I tell them which vehicle ill be driving and if im muzzleloader hunting or bow. so far no visits. however acroos the road on our north property which is where we deer hunt 2 times in 4 years they met me at the gate. asked to see my credentials asked if weve killed anything etc. they are nice and respectful. we are bordered by 14,000 acres of WMA peoperty we are land locked as we have very deep creeks and a person would have to hike in through thorns and briars a couple miles to get close to us.

That's pretty nice of you. I remember watching American Hoggers and the Dad made sausage out of some of the hogs they got. Sure made my mouth water watching that; I could almost smell it on the BBQ!

Used that show to prep my daughters for hog huntin'.
