I got a buddy that sewed a couple loops on his neck knife sheath so the stem of his clay pipe slides down into them. It i dont know if he invented the concept but it really is quite clever.

”˜morning,

Yesterday a friend sent me a link to an article regarding “Smoker’s Companions”. The article has some neat info, but also photos of recovered items (as early as mid-1600’s). That link is: www.jefpat.org/diagnostic/SmallFinds/SmokersCompanions/index-smokerscompanion.html. Just click the “Search All” on the right side for the photos of the originals. One thing that I found interesting is that it notes the spine can be used as the steel for striking a light “when a hot ember was not available”

That reminded me that I’d seen reproductions somewhere. I found this www.jas-townsend.com/smokers-companion-p-1559.html, and it’s virtually identical to the illustration in the article, down to the basal notch for resting it on the edge of a dish.

Calum

Cool info but reading your post just cost me $50 because after seeing them now I have to have one! The Jas Townsend remake looks to be pretty true to the originals which I guess is no big surprise considering the source. :v
