Accuracy of a Civil War Musket

I'm going to be testing round balls as well. I have a box of Hornady .570s to try. I was just curious what kind of Civil War accuracy the rifled musket had.

Accuracy of a Civil War Musket

I'm working up a load for deer hunting with this musket. In the southern half of Michigan, we are only allowed to use shotguns, handguns or muzzleloader for deer.

Accuracy of a Civil War Musket

Thank you Zonie! That's what I was looking for. I have a 'reissued' Colt Contract Rifled Musket and am working on an accuracy load using the standard Minie Ball (Lee Mould 575-500M). So far I'm getting around 4" groups at 50 yards using 70gr 2f.

Accuracy of a Civil War Musket

What was the 'standard' accuracy of a rifled musket during the Civil War? Was there a standard that was expected?

    Bess Hunts?

I've only taken my Bess hunting once and I missed a doe with it. :( It is my standard firelock for my ML club's woodswalk as well as for my Regimental smoothbore competitions. I took first at the Ft. Michilimackinac Pageant shooting my Bess against trade guns.

    Flintlocking deer

I used 100gr 3f in my .62 rifle and it sure worked for me as well. :)

    1863 Springfield Accuracy

I'm still quite new to my 1861 rifled musket but using a Lee Original Style Minie and 50gr 2f seems to be a sweet spot for mine. I have an "extra tall" front sight on my musket and I haven't had a chance to shoot at multiple distances yet.

    oCivil war msukets

    Not very.

Was the musket original or a reproduction? I've recently acquired a Colt 1861 rifled musket and I really enjoyed launching 525gr Minie Balls down range.

    Buffalo Bullets

I shoot conicals (Minie Balls) in my 1861 rifled musket because that's what it was designed to shoot. Right now I've only fired original style 525gr Minies in it with 50gr 2f. I do have some Hornady bullets and Buffalo Bullet Co. bullets with what amounts to a "dimple" in the base. I'm going to...

flash in the pan 1 out of 3 times

Most of my flinters have a 5/64" touch hole and my Pedersoli Bess has a 3/32". None of them "self prime" and all go boom with the first pull of the trigger.

    Filling the base????

I don't see a need for an overpowder wad with Minie or a need for lube in the hollow base. I hand dip my Lee .575-500 Minies in a bee's wax/olive oil mix up to the top of the grease grooves.

    Colt "Signature Series" 1861 Musket

Thanks for the loads! When I ran a patch down the bore, it didn't hang up at all. Very smooth to the breech.

    Conical and RB penetration?

I like mass! Even with modern guns, I prefer slow and heavy. My deer gun is a .62 early Virginia rifle. I shoot a thick patched .600 round ball and 110gr 3f. I have also just acquired a Colt 1861 rifled musket and I plan on shooting the "issued" 525gr Minie Ball (bullet) out of it. Just...

    Colt "Signature Series" 1861 Musket

I don't know yet. I haven't fired it. :( I'll check the pins next time I get it out. Thanks.
