    Ted Jayson "Pathfinder"

I knew and shot with Ted, he was always good to people in my presence. I heard negative about him but never saw it, he was a fun to shoot with. I'm just now hearing this, that's too bad. RIP, Pathfinder

    Rifled Barrel to Smooth?

Deerstalkert, That's going to be a honey of a barrel, you should have a nice gun when you're done

    Fun with a blanket gun

I liked the short barreled northwest guns that Northstar had. I believe they were the blanket gun barrel in a full length stock. They looked handy to me, and fun to carry and shoot.

    Jackie Brown "Carolina Smoothbore"

So I'm not the only one? My bedroom is all sorts of classy then, there's a few long guns leaning around the room!

    Rifled Barrel to Smooth?

Yep. My trade gun started life as a 54 renegade. I drilled/reamed it to 5/8"/.62/20 guage and turned it 2/3 round. It's short, but a great all around muzzleloader. There's pictures in one of the trade gun or canoe gun threads

    Northwest Gun Fun!

Trade guns are the most fun you can have with your clothes on! That's a beauty you have there, you have years of fun ahead of you.

Kaido's 240gr Conical is a Keeper for sure

They're a light handgun to shoot those loads, they get vigorous don't they! 😃

Having a Smoothie Trade Gun Built got question?

Shooting offhand levels the playing field between smooth bores and rifles. I won the high aggregate at a local fall rendezvous once, good for first place for the weekend. I was shooting my trade gun almost exclusively at the time in order to get to know it. Apparently it worked, I tied the high...

Having a Smoothie Trade Gun Built got question?

Rear sight really isn't necessary if you do as Waksupi says. I did the same when I finished my trade gun and got pretty good with it. I could hit my own hand from 50 yds without much trouble, and 75 yds in decent light wasn't much trouble. Offhand. I had the same thoughts about the accuracy...

The Eras Gone Johnston and Dow wins

Hmmm, that's not much difference at the heel, but the base is the steering end of the bullet, that could possibly be the culprit. Interesting

The Eras Gone Johnston and Dow wins

Bill, Have you mic'ed the base diameter of both bullets? I'm betting that Kerr is a little bit smaller than the J & D. Also, were you able to recover any fired bullets to see what the rifling marks look like at the base?

Conical bullets in a .44 ROA and 1858

That's a bummer, I've had great luck with conicals. If you're not hunting anything bigger than rabbits, you won't be missing anything. Balls shoot fine as you already know. Still, it's fun to try different things. Maybe post pictures of your bullets and list your load, maybe we can help

    1861 Navy paper cartridges

Thanks for your reply. I'll try nitrating my curler papers. I haven't before, but I guess I didn't notice it fouling. I guess I took it for granted that they shot as clean as without cartridges. I'll give it a shot, thanks again for your time

    Ruger old army loads

That's one way to do it. You don't want it dripping wet, just saturated. A little tinkering will tell you how much. I substitute deer tallow in that lube, works excellent. My barrels are clean to the muzzle. If you get fouling, add lube until you have a lube star on the muzzle. For range use, I...

Conical bullets in a .44 ROA and 1858

I've run up to 9 Brinell without trouble. If you can load them without overly straining the loading lever, you're fine Don't bother with powder coat, if your bullets fit like they should you'll just wipe it off. Pan lubing works great, as does dip lubing base first in melted lube, while holding...
