    Yep. My trade gun started life as a 54 renegade. I drilled/reamed it to 5/8"/.62/20 guage and turned it 2/3 round. It's short, but a great all around muzzleloader. There's pictures in one of the trade gun or canoe gun threads

    Bill, Have you mic'ed the base diameter of both bullets? I'm betting that Kerr is a little bit smaller than the J & D. Also, were you able to recover any fired bullets to see what the rifling marks look like at the base?

    That's a bummer, I've had great luck with conicals. If you're not hunting anything bigger than rabbits, you won't be missing anything. Balls shoot fine as you already know. Still, it's fun to try different things. Maybe post pictures of your bullets and list your load, maybe we can help

    Not knocking your method, I have access to a lathe, and I would do it your way if making a plug. But the older I get, the more impatient I get! I set my 1851 and 1860 at .003. The front of the cylinder stays clean, but that may be a byproduct of the lubed wads I use.

    I posted this already, but this was out of my 50 cal flintlock smooth rifle, no choke. The load was 40 grs 3f, lubed Durofelt wads, 3 thin card wads, brown paper shot cup holding 50 grs of #4 shot, thin overshot card, at 20 paces. Clay pigeon for reference. That's a turkey load.
