    H.E.Leman project build

I have one on my .50 Tenn Mt. flinter. I love it. Works like a ghost ring sight.

    Custom Build Surprises

That says it all. Signing your name to it says "this is the quality of work you can expect when you see my name". Nuff said.

    Front sling swivel install

Use silver solder paste and solder on an underlug... couldn't be easier. TW has the paste. You don't have to mess with flux or tinning procedure.

    Removing the plug worth it?

When I have the supplier (like Pecatonica) breech the barrel for me, I always request that they remove the plug before shipping the components... makes it a heck of a lot easier ;)

    First build suggestions?

Try Pecatonica River's early fullstock fowler. Top notch people to work with. http://www.longrifles-pr.com/fullstock.shtml Go with the Chambers english round faced lock. You won't regret it. http://www.longrifles-pr.com/jimchamberslocks.shtml Here's mine.

    L & R Durs Egg Flinter Question

Thanks for the replies. It just seemed odd to me. Yup, I marked the fly. I have a Chambers Late Ketland on my PR Tennessee Mt rifle I built, and it is a champ.

    L & R Durs Egg Flinter Question

I just received my parts for a 45 caliber North Carolina rifle from Pectonica River... as usual the CM3 maple stock is outstanding. I ordered an L & R Durs Egg flinter for the build. PR said there was a long wait on Chambers Ketland locks, so I thought I would try the Durs Egg. I disassembled...

    Trade Rifle....kind of

I live not too far from the NP visitor center and have stopped by several times just to view the Chief Joseph leman. It is worth a good viewing. The main thing that strikes me about it is the overall scale... it seems so small, petite if you will. The faux stripes fit well with the rest of...

    Lyman Great Plains Kit Build

Ditto... OxPho Blue is very easy to get the result you want, and pretty durable on my guns. I usually rub it back to get a nice blue/gray.

    Replacing a lock mainspring

I use a spring vise, but I always wondered why L & R indicates in their instructions that a pair of pliers is "best". http://www.lr-rpl.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=89:parts-diagram&catid=41:information&Itemid=68 Big concerns for using pliers or vice grips are potential for...

    LMF browning woes

Therein lies your problem, IMHO. The finer the finish the harder it is to get the rust going in my experience. 220 grit is about the finest I would ever go. 150-180 grit is better.

    LMF Brown Coppering

I wouldn't try vinegar mist. Just hit it with a bit of coarser sandpaper and a light application of LMF. The vinegar may cause you more problems than it would solve. I apply LMF with a cotton patches made from old T-shirts (like cleaning patches). Just get a small spot damp on the patch and...

    LMF Brown Coppering

Try lightly sanding the spot with a coarser grit... 150 or 180. Shouldn't be a problem if the spot isn't too big. And don't rub it in  IMO and experience, the finer the grit the harder it is to get a good rust going.

    cresent b/p on trade rifles

Good question. Pure guesswork on my part: 1. Style - a crescent butt plate, like on a more expensive Hawken, was what people wanted. I hear they painted fake stripes on the Lemans for that very reason. Henry Ford was right... no sensible reason to make anything but one model in black...
