Another TC Hawken to sight in

Rebel-- checked out the site and spent way too much acquiring an assortment of ball-ets and conicals. Also got one of the leather, hand-laced possibility bags (style B)to keep the outfit period-appropriate. I'll report when I can say what works best.

Who's drawing tags for fall seasons?

Arizona Game & Fish won't put out the word until late July. I put in for elk, deer and antelope. Paid $5 apiece to get my bonus points for buffalo and desert bighorn sheep, but didn't apply this year-- too busy to devote a solid month to bighorns, and the only hunt unit for buffalo this year...

Another TC Hawken to sight in

I did have 3-4 inches of horizontal stringing. But also 4-5 inches of vertical, as well. Gotta work out the cleaning routine. I will give some thought to taking off the bead on the front sight, but I've actually always liked a small front bead. Shot a lot of cottontails in my youth with a...

Another TC Hawken to sight in

Thanks, arcticap. I'll try some lighter charges behind the PRB's to see if that helps on my next range trip. I'm shooting a 1-in-48" twist.

Another TC Hawken to sight in

Thanks,Cayugad. I do like the heft and authenticity of the Hawken. And I appreciate your feedback on the care and feeding of the gun. I've seen the recipes for Moosemilk on the forum, and I intend to mix up some to cut my costs-- TC's cleaning fluid isn't cheap if one is shooting frequently...

Another TC Hawken to sight in

Picked up a TC Hawken .50-cal percussion to keep my .50-cal Omega company last week while down in Tucson. It was a consignment gun, and came with a range rod, a powder horn, a leather ball bag, a ball mold and handle, and a bunch of balls, patches and #11 caps. I did get it out for a couple...

    Thompson/center flinter

Thanks for the heads-up on what they're going for. That was my suspicion-- haven't seen anything yet in that shop at bargain prices. Half the fun is looking, anyway, isn't it? Maybe I'll have a better idea what I want after the Williams Mt Men rendezvous on Memorial Day.

    Thompson/center flinter

I have a line on a TC flinter here in Arizona. It's in a shop, and they're asking $360. Looks to be in good shape. Don't know what the rate of twist is, or the length of the barrel. I've never shot flintlock, but loved the heft and balance of this gun. Also liked the sights-- there was a...

You know, I've noted the Williams rendezvous for years, but have never been. Maybe I'll make it this year. Thanks for the heads-up.

Thanks, snake-eyes. I like what I've seen. Seems like a nice mix of romantics and pragmatists. I'm more of a lurker than a frequent contributor, but I'll add my thoughts from time to time.

"All who wander are not lost..."

Good morning, all. Just started shooting the frontstuffers-- started w/ an in-line, now looking at something in PRB. The elk (red deer)are moving to their high summer range now-- should be bulls in the hollow a mile up the hill from here now. [list]
