Missing patch ... and nipple ?

54 Caliber Lyman Great Plains ... shooting round balls with 100 grains of FFF, and using a .015 lubed patch that is 1 5/16 in diameter. * * * * * Hello ... I'm back to shooting my BP after a couple of years and remembered this forum. My questions are: 1) I think I remember that after you shoot...

    where are the patches?

Hmmmm .... well .... I guess they are burning up or something .... because I would have clearly seen them if they looked like yours. What to you think I'm doing wrong ... or need to do differently? I have a .54 GPR I just bought new, and have been testing it with loads of fff from 60 to 95...

    where are the patches?

I've read in this forum to look at the patches after firing to determine the barrel condition of my new GPR, etc. .... but I've yet to find one of them. I know the eyes aren't what they used to be .... but still. :hmm: How far do they fly, and any thoughts on why I haven't seen them .... (be...

    peep sights fragile?

I've noticed some conversations regarding the desirability of peep sights for those of us with eyesight that isn't what it used to be ..... I'm pretty fond of the basic sights I have on my GPR ... they are solid and you could drop the thing upside-down on a rock, sights first, and they...

GPR is on it's way :)

Ya know ... I've used peepsights before and know that they are really nice ... but I'm a little concerned about putting them on my GPR because in the pictures it looks like they might be a little on the fragile side .... could get knocked off or bent pretty easy. Any thoughts?

Gun left loaded for how long???

THis is really good news to me .... I bought a GPR a while back and like to shoot it every now and then, but sometimes when I load it and don't end up shooting it, I have wondered about what happens. Thanks a bunch for the info.

Gun left loaded for how long???

I've read where some leave a gun loaded (that has not yet been fired, and so didn't need cleaning) for a weekend or more ... but what about a month or so? Is it hurting anything having the dry powder sit there in a clean barrel?

    pre-hunt routine?

Being new to black powder hunting I'm wondering how to best prepare for an early morning hunt when your rifle is cleaned and greased up, ... and you're slipping into the woods before daylight. At the place where near where I'll be going is a barn where I could go inside and set off a cap and...

A few ?'s regarding my new 54 GPR

Keep in mind this is my first BP ... but I've been reading this forum for quite a while ... just got a few followup questions and/or comments ... 1. Regarding cleaning, ... I have read here about cleaning with water, and all the different stuff people add to it ... I tried that once, and then...

Also got a new Lyman GPR 54 ...

I see I'm not the only one to just get a new Lyman GPR 54. Mine came in a couple days ago (my first BP rifle) and I wanted to take my son out this morning deer hunting with it (BP deer season) .. so we slipped out on Friday afternoon and shot it enough to know where the ball is gonna go. Put...

Way to carry extra caps quietly.

Is that just for safety reasons ... concerned one might go off, or might they draw moisture from sweat?
