    Lock and Breach Plug Alinement

I had the same issue when I built Track's Kit Carson kit about 10 years ago. Additionally, at half cock there was no clearance to get a capper in to cap without thumbing back the hammer in between half and full cock. I think this is an unsafe method of capping, but I have seen this second issue...

    left hand vrs right hand

I'll weigh in too as a LH flint shooter for 50 years. My first rifle was a DGW Numrich Minuteman rifle- piece of junk! RH was all that was available. Built my first rifle in 1985- RH, due to a good kit deal on $ from mentor Vaughn Goodwin (previous NMLRA Pres). So, shot RH guns left handed for...

Help With Threading Lock Bolt Blank

SUCCESS! Here's the end result. Thanks to the replies I was able to figure this out. Up front I reported using a Craftsman die set which would not cut new threads despite containing separate instructions for cutting threads and chasing out existing threads. I did not know about the differences...

The set is solid dies- no option to open them up. I bore down until I broke a sweat!

Help With Threading Lock Bolt Blank

Thanks, guys- Yes I did use cutting oil, and I am hand starting the die stock with the bolt in a vice. The comments about die purpose may be the answer, but the instructions with the set did not indicate limitations on die use. Nevertheless, a good quality die sounds like a good idea.

Help With Threading Lock Bolt Blank

Reaching out to the builders out there for advice... I was trying to make a 10-32 lock bolt from a piece of round shock and for the life of me could not get the die to cut threads. I have no trouble with tapping holes, but am inexperienced with bolts. It's a Craftsman Tap and Die set, I...

    Hi from Scotland

Welcome from Maryland. My ancestors came from Angus County, Forfarshire- stone mason by trade. Came here and built railroad bridges. Came to Canada first, then to US. What's it like for ML shooting in Scotland?

Smooth rifles, were they made as new guns?

Here's my take on the subject: I had an opportunity to study an original "Smooth rifle" built by Samuel St. Clair, gunsmith in Snyder County, Pa, active from about 1823-1849. This gun had a 44 inch octagon to round .45 cal barrel stocked in maple, with all the trappings of a rifle- front and...

    WANTED Ramrod Tip for Fowler

Hi Folks, looking for someone who sells a 12 ga version of the below. Photo shows a 20 ga tip that fits onto a 3/8 rod. The flared end is profiled to seat a ball, but has a flat threaded insert that adapts the tip for seating wads. I love this for my 20 ga fowler, but want one in 12 ga for a...

    Unacceptable kit condition?

I have assembled 3 Chambers kits- their American Pistol, Haines Rifle, and Pa. Fowler (with rifled barrel). I found them without significant flaws, or really any issues requiring a lot of fixing. You still have to do quite a lot of fitting and inletting as some locations for inlets are only...

    Track of the Wolf Kits

I have built 3 offerings from Chambers, one from TVM, and one from Track. They all require fiddling with to get things just right. This is not derogatory, just means that you must be prepared to learn how they are laid out, what tweaks are needed, and patience to learn how to minimize mistakes...

Thank you for the responses- and the glowing performance comments. Dave contacted me today and we did identify an administrative disconnect which was immediately resolved. Appreciate the feedback from the forum . So, we are good on the work (partially completed, to be finished very soon). I'll...
