    Sharpening Flints

You ARE using natural Black English hand made flints aren't you? If you are using machine cut agate, they will not hand knapp worth a darn. The agates would be better served with the file or a grinding wheel than trying to chip an edge on them.

    Reshaping Modern Axhead

The photo below is of a tomahawk a friend made me for my birthday. It is made from a modern carpenter's hatchet, done with a 4" angle grinder and files.

    RIT Dye instead of walnuts?

The last dyeing I did, on a powder horn throat and a hunting frock, was done with potassium permanganate. I can't give you any proportions for mixing as I just winged it. The liquid mixture will look like grape juice, but will turn whatever is put in it very brown, how brown depending on the...

    Patch punch tool?

I agree about the square patches working as well as round ones. I also use the rotary cutting tool and cutting mat. A lot easier to use, and less fuss than making the hole saw cutter. I used to use the hole saw type, but after using the rotary cutter method, the hole saw cutters are setting...

    Mass quantity Patches?

Jo-Anne Fabrics has some stuff known as Cotton Sateen, which is used for lining drapes. It is a white, very tight woven, 100% cotton and works great for patches. Being a cheap SOB, I have picked up some of the patches and used them over again for an additional 2 shots. I wash the material...

    Barking Squirrels, how much bark?

My thoughts on it are, all squirrel and no bark. As you found out, head shots are a must, and even those are very messy, even with smaller calibers.

    cleaning flints

I am a firm believer in a clean flint, pan, and frizzen. I wet a finger and wipe all 3 after each shot. I keep a piece of rag tied to my bag strap and use it after the wet finger wipe. I am so used to doing it I have caught myself weting the finger and wiping them clean for the first shot of...

    Aluminum Mould 911

Here's my idea of what could have happened. LEE molds are aluminum, like the Rapine you were using. LEE states in their instructions the alignment grooves and V's must be lubricated, either with beeswax, or preferably, bullet lube. They state aluminum becomes "sticky" at high temps, causing...

    How to fill powder horn?

Here is a picture of three small funnels I use for filling various horns. The brass one on the left is used to fill the powder horn. It is available from the Log Cabin Shop, and various other places. The center one, and the one on the right are disposable tips for an otoscope, the flashlight...

    Short Starter

I agree with that! There are those out there who would rather chew a ball of tinfoil than use a short starter, and YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE! :blah: Personally, I find it hard to believe that of the 10's of thousands of people who owned ML's back then, there wasn't one intelligent chap who thought...

    bird dogs

Grouse numbers in our area of Penna were off the chart, on the low end. I think I had 5 flushes, and did not fire a shot at a grouse. Dover and I did manage to take 20 woodcock however.

    bird dogs

My dog has better blood lines than I do. :haha: some of the big names in his background are Tamoka, Old Hemlock Briar, I'm Oscar, Pinnacle, Grouse Ridge John, Cash Master, and a number of Bondhu dogs. We are woodcock hunters, first and foremost, and also hunt grouse and ringnecks. I have...

    Loading a flintlock

In the initial post on this thread, it was stated the writer saw a shooter at a match load by plugging the touch hole, which gave good results. The gun went off with a "distinct klatch-boom". That doesn't sound like good results to me. It sounds like a hang-fire. If your flintlock has a...

    bird dogs

I also have an English setter, probably the greatest single bird dog a man ever owned. I may be a little biased, but that's the way I feel. Are you buying a finished dog, or will you be training him yourself. If you are getting a pup, don't expect to have a bird dog just because it is an...

    Black powder into Canada

I was talking to a couple of guys I shoot with, and they are planning a Caribou hunt in Canada in September. The firearm of choice will be traditional flintlocks loaded with patched round ball and BP. I asked if they had checked on what is involved in taking BP across the border and was...
