    Skimming Slag

Nav, don't go by the numbers on your pot. They are only a reference. Buy yourself a casting thermometer. They're not very expensive but well worth it. I normally cast right around 700*-750*

    Weighing round balls

You may have differences when casting from lot to lot if you use different batches of lead but using the same batch of lead, if your casting technique is good, you shouldn't get more than a grain or two from ball/bullet to bullet. Even 3 grains isn't going to hurt you. I've already weighed...

    Weighing round balls

Good point Deerstalker. I've seen variations of weight even in jacketed bullets. I weighed my balls one time but now I just cast and shoot and or hunt with them. At the ranges I shoot a bit of variation won't hurt me.

    Weighing round balls

Supposedly weighing will give you better accuracy but is it worth it? I don't know. It may be a good idea for load development weighting both powder and ball to see what shoots the best. I don't have the time but if someone would cast a lot of balls and sort them by weight into groups with a...

I used to use UPS but had an incident with a muzzy a couple years ago. Now I only ship USPS. Never any issues.

    Patches

Rebel it has been proven time and time again that with both PRB and Conical bullets a change in lube can have a significant affect on accuracy. Also patch thickness has to be determined for a proper seal.

    Patches

Well cotton and pillow tick are the same - both cotton. To start, if you don't have a friend that has patches, is to purchase .010", .015" and .020" Oxyoke patches. Dry ones. Lube a couple of each with something simple like shortening and go shoot and see what thickness shoots better. You...

What makes a good patch knife?

I bought a dandy little patch knife at a gun show a while back. Its a custom job in a sheath with a leather strap that goes around your neck. I've been using it for years and I've yet to sharpen it but it will still shave hair off your arms! Only has about a 2.5" blade and about a 3" handle.

    Bore Seasoning

You don't need hot water but it facilitates the drying process.

    Bore Seasoning

I always remove and clean my sidelocks with warm soapy water followed by a hot water flush. Swab with dry patches then a coule patches with alcohol while barrel is,still hot, the a patch with oil to prevent rust. Store the barrel muzzle down for a day or two to allow any residual oil to flow...

    Bore Seasoning

I don't use the yelliw stuff anymore. I like the green pine scent much better. And it doubles as a car freshener!

    wasting powder & caps

So what do you do with that measurer? You set it and shove it into the spout end of the flask, fill, release the button closing the valve and presto, the measurer is full. Is that about right?
