I don't know when it started, but it was in Colorado/ Wyoming for years before it found it's way here.
"CWD was first identified in captive deer in a Colorado research facility in the late 1960s, and in wild deer in 1981. By the 1990s, it had been reported in surrounding areas in northern Colorado and southern Wyoming. Since 2000, the area known to be affected by CWD in free-ranging animals has increased to at least 31 states across all 4 regions (West, Midwest, South, Northeast) of the continental United States. "

The original "deer" were Elk, IIRC.

We got it in moose, elk and deer in Montana....but generally very low frequency of infections. The our State does an excellent job of testing your game if you bring it in (free)...or we can extract the "parts" (pharyngeal lymph nodes) ourself and send them in. I've done both. Got results back from deer and elk samples this month in less than a week. So far all my game has tested negative.....so I been eating it!
dang never done that before.skin them from behind the ears to the butt hole.deer ribs are my favorite part.but i like all of it honestly.but them ribs just make my mouth water lol

My brother-in-law always does the gutless cleaning. Personally, I enjoy eating the tenderloins too much to waste them.
The loins aren’t a problem too get out once you learn how it’s done..
I watched a video “ 11 minutes to process a deer using the gutless method “ or something similar.. lol
The Ol boy on the video says he actually can do clean one in 5 minutes..
That’s deboned and into the cooler..
This is the 4-5 one I’ve done and it still takes me 45 minutes or so..
It’s just a lot less mess & cleaner cuts of meat ..
I was always that way too… until recently.
At 66 now I use the quickest, easiest method on my old wore out body…
Tennessee limits on deer are 2 bucks a year & 3 does a day from now till January.
So plenty of opportunities ahead !

As long as I can salvage the tenderloins I'm sold! I'll do some research to learn the technique.The loins aren’t a problem too get out once you learn how it’s done..

Quite a few years ago I was on a hunt with a small group that included my12 year old grandson. (He'll be 30 in January) One of the guys killed an elk around midday pretty close to camp and we all decended on it and quickly completed a gutless handling. When we were done and all the meat was on the way to camp I and the boy were next to the remains thinking about the tenderloins. Without any prompting he got the carcass belly down, plunged a knife into the back just behind the ribs and massaged those tenderloins out by sticking his hand inside.
Ate a batch of ribs other day and cooking another batch now. Yes they are good!!
Cooked s9me deer meat today in crock pot with potatoes onions and carrots. And it is good
Many ,many years ago one person of are hunting group killed two dear and needed help to field dress them. He came back to the camp to get help, we returned to the deer maybe a hour later. Both deer had been stripped of the back straps and hind legs deboned of meat. I always think of that when I'm trying to do that and it takes me over a hour for one deer and I'm not worried about anyone seeing me. Guess I don't do it enough to get it right.
How is this on the topic of CWD ?
