I have wanted one of these for so long so I finally got one. I would consider this to be the first practical repeating carbine. It is a Uberti .44 cal Cattleman's Carbine. It is also the most balanced rifle I have ever handled. I only wish I had bought one sooner.

Negative Range Report

While this started out to be a real fun shooter, I had a problem before I put a dozen rounds through it. The lever that rotates the cylinder is now barely catching it. It looks like the end is chipped. I believe there may be a defect in the metal. The rifle was made by Uberti and they are known to make quality arms. I shipped it back to Cabela's today and hopefully a replacement will be back soon. If it was a true defect and not a design flaw, I will not hold it against the model. I just got a lemon, hopefully. That aside, I have been getting so many compliments on the looks of it.

That lever is called a "Hand" and is a common part to break or wear on these cap and ball guns but shouldn't right out of the box. :shake:

Hello PreserveFreedom. I have had one of these carbines for some years now. I got interested in it after reading an article in the Backwoodsman magazine. Since then, I have had a lot of fun with it. The local muzzleloader club that I used to belong to allowed me to shoot it one time in the rifle trail walk. I came in second place with it. Everyone was suprised and the shoot directors later told me that they silently laughed at my request to use it. They figured that I would hit few targets.

It is in fact a very accruate shooter. I often packed it along while chasing bobcats with my hounds. I have also taken a lot of squirrels and grouse with it.

Cabelas will take care of the problem easy enough for you by a simple hand/spring replacement. So far, I have had no issues with mine. Enjoy it often and as you said, a lot of people compliment the looks of them. I have had several people want to trade me out of mine.

I include a few pics

Both of the above pics taken a few years back. I scanned them from hard copy prints so the quality is lacking. I had intentions of taking a Mnt. Lion with this gun, but never got around to it.

I have since removed all of the bluing, proof marks, and writing on the barrel. Only the serial number remains. Also removed the varnish stock finish and replaced it with a hand rubbed oil finish. I made the scabbard to the left of the carbine out of light weight deer hide.

The hound next to me in the upper pics was always by favorite and the best cold tracker that I ever had. After a long and active life, she now rests in the ground below the carbine. Interestingly, my daughter found this heart shaped rock and painted a memorial on it for me. This gun brings back a lot of memories.

Thanks lonehunter for the comment on the dogs. Say, the one in the back is a full blood Walker and the one next to me is 50/50 Walker and Bluetick. She was the only one of the litter that took on more of the Walker look.

In case anyone is wondering, I got an email from Cabela's today. They are shipping my new carbine out next week. I imagine they probably had their gunsmith look it over before making a decision or something. Either way, I am happy with the results.

That is good to hear!!!

Give us an update when you get it.

I have had good customer service with Cabelas in the past concerning the issues that I had with two different percussion revolvers and hope you have the same experience.

Steve
