Tin can test is good. However with a few solid smacks of a #4 pellet to the head said quarry (turkey for me) is gonna be out long enough to harvest him unconventionaly if need be. This actually happend to me once. One pellet knocked a gobbler out. I picked him up and chirpped with my mouth call. He opened one eye and it was on! My 12 year old was dancing around and yelling to hold him still so he could shoot him, I was screaming DONT SHOOT and the ol Tom was proceeding to dismember my jackets quilted lining whilst beating the cranberries outta me with his wings. I finally dropped to a knee, grabbed a rock and smashed him. This is 100% true. Had we a video I would be typing this from a small cabin in the Bahama's over a nice long island iced tea. BTW this was with a 12GA using 2F as that CVA Gobbler didnt cheek slab me as does my current 20GA.

Oh Nathan.....

LOL

My 1F loads in 20GA have no problem at 25 yds. I may get a can of 1.5 F though.

Now you got me wanting to test my 1f 10ga guage load that's weighs 123 grains on a tin can.....Whats wrong with 1F? I thought that was what was "supposed" to be used for something that large. It is what patterns best anyway. Can't kill em if you can't hit em. I plan to find out for sure in the next 3 weekends as thats how much longer turkey season is and I work mon-fri.
Not saying it can't be better, but at 25 yards from a 10ga cyl bore SxS I don't think it's bad

123 grains....🤣 What happens at 124 grains?

That's the issue 123gn!
My 10g gets 90gn of a mix of 4f£3f because that's what it comes as in a bottle marked up as "fine'.
On top of that it gets four OS cards and then 2oz of shot.
Takes geese beyond 30 yards. And foxes beyond 30 yards.
You are using roughly 30% more powder in the new age belief that the course powder produces better patterns.

Why hasn't anyone made a courser powder than 1f if it improves patterns? I mean why stop there 🤦

What happend to square loads? Starting there and ended up at 1 1/2 shot 1 5/8 powder.....thats 115 grains by volume and on a scale weighs 123. My swiss 3f by volume at 90gr weighs 97grn so I'm willing to bet your 3f/4f mix weighs closer to 105 if its closer to 4f than 3f , so now we aren't that far apart are we? What's a few grains over a better pattern? $0.03? I got 3 cents to
Burn. Pun intended. Your spending your money on shot. If it works
It works. Whats that saying.... every guns different. Especially smoothbores.
Never less, glad you found something that works. Ps I'm not stopping there... I'm still going to continue to try other brands, granulations, shot size and load combinations. Part of the quest.

Were "square loads" normally used before or after the introduction of the choked barrel ?

I think folks of the age of a lot of us use the generic term tin can for any metal can that held soup or veggies, soda cans not included. I put a tin can out to shoot and want to find out how many holes are in the can and the penetration. I'll shoot at about 25 to 30 yards and the target can is on a stick. I like at least four or five penetrating shot holes in the can for it to be effective for birds or small game. I think one gets more realistic results if the can is off the ground.

Soda cans used to be a lot thicker aluminum. Fill the bottom with water to top. Place an empty one on top of it. One shooter hits the bottom with a round ball. Up goes the top can. Second shooter shots the pop can "clay" pigeon in the air with small diameter shot. Doesn't work anymore. Bottom aluminum pop can just collapses without launching top can. Maybe using steel can on the bottom will push the top aluminum can up. Or maybe enough pressure to launch another steel can. Can test penetration on the flyer. If your double barrel smoothbore can handle a round ball safely, a single shooter can play the game with round ball in one barrel and shot in the other. Just have to remember which triggers fires which barrel and not get it in reverse. Fun demo for spectators or club shoot or entertain beginners with adequate instruction.

The correct term is “Tinned can”, from the tin solder used to seal the steel can, not “Tin can”.

Food cans were never made from tin.

Here's a "tin can test" I did at 10 yards with my Harper's Ferry smoothbore pistol. It was loaded with 40 grains of 777, an equal amount of #5 shot, and two felt wads.
