I didn’t know as kid in the late 1960s that they were called ‘swamped’, but I learned at Colonial Williamsburg as that kid that barrels were larger across at the rear, tapered towards the middle and then flared towards the muzzle.

l learned real fast when I shouldered a custom rifle made by a very talented acquaintance. It felt very light and balanced as opposed to my straight barrel builds.
