The diameter is dependent upon caliber all I make are threaded 10/32 with the exception of 32 caliber that one gets threaded 8/32 the handles are drilled and taped and the rods are threaded, coated with epoxy and threaded on after curing they are further secured with a cross screw. In all the years I’ve been making these I’ve never had a handle come off even when pulling a ball. The wood is what is requested most commonly black walnut or oak. Some don’t want the custom handle then they get a maple handle done the same way ( less sheckles)

I bought a similar one years ago that a couple fellows were making to sell at show. Mine has a brass funnel-shape fitting that protects the bore. Nice work!

As far as the weight it’s dependent on how long and diameter it doesn’t take a lot of effort to load a .490 ball and.018” patch with a 3/8” rod every body that has tried one has refused to sell it ( I used to just steal the kids to trade for sheckels at shoots he won’t let me do that anymore)
