A gunman with practice can indeed shoot a single action as fast as a semiauto. Bob Munden ring any bells?
I've shot several locks off over the years with no ill effects. These were all illegally placed locks on property where I was the manager.
Sure, there's always some guy who is supernaturally talented, but the average joe? No. Extraordinary nerve-muscle-brain complexes result in a Tom Brady or one of those fast guns, but that's the exception.
 
Besides the aforementioned guns out of their era, things that bother me are blue jeans in the old west and flinchlocks that go 'full semi-auto'.
