Thank you for doing this test @PoorPete! I'm curious about the "lube line", is there a ridge there or just where lube is left?

Do you think the bottom of the cone can be smoothed out either by lapping it more or shooting?

I was able to smooth out the bottom of the cone with JB bore cleaner on a green scotch brite with a 50cal jag ( my bore is 54cal). I tested loading a patch and ball and they slid all the way down smoothly. I then shot it out with compressed air and the patch look good with no cutting marks.
I must admit it makes it really nice to load with that cone!

You know that is the tool I use. I had several rifles and smoothbores to do and didn't want to buy multiple tools. Ed's tool works great !!

I use top quality Rice Mfg. Barrels as they are match grade from the factory and advised not to cone!
