A few years ago, The local home brew supply was selling the resin scraped off the hop machinery...It had an IBU rating of something like 60...Compared to the normal 5-10ish of hops. :shocked2:

As far as Germany goes...I read the memoirs from Wilhelm Ott: Memories of the activity as Managing Mayor of Augsburg.

From what I gather from the translation, They had plenty of beer right up until Americans began to occupy German soil... He spoke of a half case of beer on the final day of the war. However in the days following surrender, all provisions became scarce...One excerpt spoke of people relabeling alcohol as vinegar to hide it.
