Welcome from Claremore!!
I shoot at the Cherokee Game Management shooting range a couple of times a year with a friend from work. The range probably isn’t too far from your house, it’s on the north end of Camp Gruber.
With your interest in Hawkens, you have to go to the Hawken Classic near St. Louis in August.

That definitely sounds like something I would like to check out!.........Thanks!

I forget exactly where I was. I think I was in Colorado. I actually stepped across the Arkansas river without getting my feet wet. I have also been to the confluence of the Arkansas river, and the Mississippi river.
The Arkansas River is like 3 different rivers from start to finish. Begins in the Rockies at Leadville Colorado as a fast running stream you can white water raft on. The Royal Gorge bridge goes over The Ark near Canyon City. Next the river hits the flatlands of the Great Plains in E. Colorado, Kansas, and N. Oklahoma. Somewhere on this long stretch you could probably walk across, particularly in the dry season. In many places the river permeates under the sand. As the river makes its way it picks up lots of tributaries and gets wider and deeper. Finally, when The Ark hits the 3 Forks area at Muskogee, it becomes a major size river and remains so for the rest of its journey. I spend a lot of time running the Arkansas in my duck boat around Muskogee and know all its nooks and crannies for about a 15 mile strech.

Hello Tom and welcome from Salmon, Idaho (Elmer Keith Country) and the River of No Return!!!

P.S. We put in a nice target ranch here on the ranch and I hope you are able to do the same on your place!!

New member wanting to introduce myself. I'm Tom (Hawken50!) and I'm from Muskogee,OK. New to this site but not totally new to muzzleloading. My wife, two kids (now grown), and I use to be heavily involved in civil war reenacting back in the 90's. I've since gotten more involved in the local history of my immediate area sometimes referred to as the 3 Forks (confluence of the Arkansas, Verdigris, Grand Rivers). I've done many historical/educational presentations and living history at schools and various civic groups and club meetings. I love all kinds of historically iconic weapons but tend to gravitate towards Hawken-type rifles and Bowie knives.......hence the name Hawken50!. I want to get more into the actual shooting and hunting of these guns and currently have a .50 cal Kit Carson looking type rifle with another .50 cal custom Hawken type rifle on the way that I just purchased. I would also like to get into some of the rendevous events and meet/learn from others who know more about this black powder hobby. Anyway, my wife and I recently built a home on a bluff, on 10 acres, overlooking the Arkansas River. I've now got a nice place to do some real shooting! I'll probably be firing all sorts of newbie type questions concerning black powder shooting. Maybe some of you closer okie shooters can help me in person. As soon as I get our new home finalized, I'd like to put in some kind of a shooting range and invite some of yall over.
Nice! Liked reading your comments! Was not aware of the 3 Forks area. Best regards and luck for your endeavors!

They don't make 'em like that anymore! And today's world would not "allow" him to accomplish what he did, a true icon!

You live in a special part of the world. Used to be an Oklahoma sponsored PR campaign proclaiming the area as "Green Country". I grew up not too far downstream, but am only now appreciating that Green Country is the land of Osage, Cherokee, Anadarko, Sequoyah, J.J.Cale, Leon Russell and Roy Clark. Great place to live.

And Will Rogers!

I live down river from you. Ft Smith, however I hunt Kerr and Vian some. How was duck season? Seems to be getting worse each year. Welcome

Wow! You found yourself a beautiful spot for sure. Congratulations to you and your wife. I think I'd like to do a painting from your photo of the moon on the river; if you don't mind?
