Dumb question?

Have a CVA mountain rifle that shoots 3 inches left at 25 yds. Now comes the dumb question. Should I bump the rear sight to the left or move the the front sight to the left. Its been along time since I tried to move sights.

The old code "FORS". Front sight opposite, Rear sight same. This is to move the strike of the projectile where you need it to be.

The way I remember is as a kid I had a daisy BB gun. It had the elevated rear ramp sight you raise to shoot higher/farther distance. The front sight is just the opposite. May seem odd but I think about that and that's how I remember.

To adjust sights, typically you will move the front site toward the direction of the miss. For example, if you're missing left, move the front sight left. This will adjust the POI back to the right. In regard to the rear sight, you will move it opposite of the direction you're missing. If your hitting to the left, move the rear sight to the right. This would work the same when adjusting for elevation. I hope this helps.

Honestly it still confuses me sometimes. Have to ponder it a bit. Guess it comes from too many years of using scopes.

It confuses me also, but only because I am an old fart. Really, just remember: back sight going up/down, left/right, will move the bullet respective of direction, front sight does just the opposite.

Dumb questions are asked by the below:

1. Spouses
2 Children
3. Bosses

I keep a 3 or 5 ring binder.

In it, is pertinent information for shooting in general and specific to each rifle and pistol.

The first section contains information such as which way to move the front and rear sights. It contains information on each mold such as diameter of each and the number of grains for each mold. Wind drift and elevation to 100 yards.

Next section is specific to each rifle and pistol. Make and model number of each, serial number of each, ball size, cap size, nipple size and thread diameter, and number of grains of powder, (minimum and maximum), powder grains for 25, 50 and 100 yards, patch diameter and lube . The book leaves nothing to chance nor a failing memory.

Each shooting venture is written down with comments.

Correct you are, for End Result! First you have to make the sight correction in order to know where to move the rifle.

The front follows the errant strike. The rear moves away from the errant strike.

I concur with Dave951- move both sights- that way one sight won’t be moved all of the way over.

I keep an index card in my shooting box with the correct front sight-rear sight movement. But I can not remember what that is right now Or what I had for breakfast ! Thanks O.R.
