any thoughts on the process of crowning the barrel of your muzzleloader. Good idea or bad idea?

Or is it called coning?

Whatever

Crowning and conning are two different things. A crown is normally installed at the muzzle and protects the rifling. Damaged rifling can have negative effects on accuracy.

Conning is where you taper the last couple inches of the bore such that the bore is actually wider at the muzzle and tapers to its true dimension a few inches inside the bore. The purpose is to provide for easier loading with less chance of ball deformation. It can also eliminate the need to use a short starter all together.

There are two thoughts on coning ”¦ some swear by it and some swear against it. A properly coned barrel does not hurt accuracy. But an improperly conned barrel, uneven taper, can have negative effects on accuracy.

Joe Woods makes caliber specific coning tools with complete instructions for use that result in properly conned muzzles with uniform even tapers.

thank you. Coning is what I was thinking about. Do you have contact info for Joe Wood, like a website?

There have been many conversations on the Forum. I don't remember anyone ever saying it hurt their accuracy and it does make loading much easier.

I saw an article in Muzzleloader a couple months ago. can't remember who wrote it, I'll look. But that name sounds familiar. I'll look and see it there is any contact info on it.

I think it was Jan/Feb 06 issue.

I have an Edward Marshall rifle made from one of Jim Chambers kits that I did several years ago. It came with a coned .58 cal barrel and it didn't seem to hurt the accuracy at all, but made it much easier to load a tight patch and ball combination.

Regards, Dave

Thanks BirdDog6 for posting the info.

Weasle. Give Joe a call vice sending him an e-mail. He is a wealth of information but be prepared as he may try and talk your ear off.
