I cheat a bit now with punkwood. After I char it I’ll swish it around in a little sludge of water and gunpowder and leave the pieces on the workbench to dry a couple days. Nothing takes a spark in my experience like black powder-infused punk. I use mostly cottonwood and willow.

FWIW I did a little research and everything I find says Altoids didn’t start using tin boxes until the 1920s.

We dont use char cloth out here, there is enough natural tinder about.
Altoids cans, we use the heck out of.
Tools in one, flints in the other. Browned them when I browned my barrel.

I can’t imagine things like that weren’t done.

Personally I’ve found punk wood as is to be plenty fine. But I did do a mix of BP and a non charred patch once to see if it would start a fire in a pinch.
