After reading Black Mag 3 propaganda that the stuff would work in a flint lock I tried it. Primed with BM3, with 4X Goex, etc. Very slow, sometimes no explosion at all. Those things may work okay in cap guns, but not flinters. graybeard

If you are referring to American Pioneer powder, the answer is that it does not reliably ignite in a flintlock. I bought a can 3 years ago on a whim and have not used it at all. I wanted to try it in my BPCR rifles but so far have always used black powder.

It's no wonder Flintlocks can get a bad rep for misfiring, right powders, right flints etc.

I had a good friend trying to steer me off flintlocks last week telling me they weren't reliable.

I bit my tongue... :shake:

You should have bit HIS tongue.

Such nonsense has been passed around by the unknowing for many years. It is the primary reason that more BP shooters don't own and shoot Flintlocks. Those of us who do know better.

Heck!

The people who endorse American Pioneer Powder, alone is enough to tell me to stay away

Funny how they try to make it sound like every Pioneer used the stuff, and has a rich American Tradition! :shake:

manure has bad reviews all around!

i'v been using pyrodex p and a kicker charge of 10 grains of 3f black. prime with 4f black in my tc 50 flinter. goes bang everytime

So, Skit; You are carrying around THREE different powders? How do you keep them separate and identified? Why would you bother using a Kicker Charge of 3Fg instead of just using 3Fg for the whole main charge? Why are you priming with 4Fg when 3Fg will do just as well?

Welcome to the forums. Sorry to sound like I am attacking you on your first post, but I am only asking you questions I would ask you at the range, or in the field? If you are new to flintlocks, there is a knowledge gap that can be easily filled by reading the forums here.

Skit, welcome to the forum.

I can understand that you would use the synthetic powders as a work around when true black powder is not available. It may be the only way to conserve the limited supply of black powder that you have. I heartily encourage you to get a supply of black powder. In the mean time you have complicated your life by using all the different powders.
