    36 revolver powder charge questions

Just FYI, my 66 gr 0.354" balls on top of 12 grains fffg are giving me over 1,000 fps in a single shot underhammer. 22 grains seems pretty stout. Revolvers use that much more powder than single shots? Steve in North Texas

    First Time Casting!

So as long as I separate out the "light weight" (suspecting a cavity) bullets from each group (cavity) I can just mix/match bullets and have at it? That would be a lot less trouble than keeping them separate . . .

    First Time Casting!

Paul and All: Just had another casting session- this one went a lot better, as I set my temperature fairly high for initial melting and then reduced it somewhat; just high enough so that the bottom-pour spout stayed liquid (so I could pour in two cavities one right after the other). So I...

    Compressed Load/Airspace?

Guys: I have an underhammer "Dueling Pistol" with a "patent chamber" (narrow chamber at end of barrel for powder; bullet too fat to enter). After much finagling looks like the volume is ~0.06" or so cubic inches; probably a milliliter (makes sense- pedersoli gun!). And it looks like a...

    FFFg Density?

Thanks all. After much finagling looks like my ~0.06 or so cubic inches is very close to a milliliter (makes sense- pedersoli gun!). And it looks like a milliliter holds right around 15 gr of FFFg. I crunched this several different ways with data from different websites and applied my trusty...

    FFFg Density?

What is the density of Goex FFFg or where could I look it up? I need to know how much powder (in grains) is needed to completely fill my "patent chamber" (0.06 in3). So if I just knew what the grains per cubic inch were of black powder . . . Steve in North Texas

    First Time Casting!

I just got done melting down some large (8 lb) ingots of "pure" lead into smaller (1 lb) ingots so they would fit into my Lee electric pot. This was a fascinating experience, and I am learning quite a bit about the "personality" of lead! But more questions came up: O.k., is there a difference...

    First Time Casting!

Wow! Thanks all! Once again I am amazed at how much information and experience everyone has; and how willing you all are to help a "newbie." Yep ASOK I hang out in a bunch of shooting forums; I find that you can learn a lot from different people and disciplines. I apologize for "duplicate...

    First Time Casting!

So I read up all the threads I could about casting, googled up some expert advice, bought the equipment, and it finally stopped raining last night. 1) I bought the Lee Production Pot IV cause I'm casting .36 cal RB; don't need a lot of capcity, right? Guess what- the ingots I bought for...

    Nippleology

Gurus: So there are umpty-odd flavors of nipples. My Pietta New Army revolver has one kind with a different thread, diameter, etc. than my Pedersoli Carleton Underhammer. 1) What is the taxonomy/classification system for nipples? What are the different types? 2) How would one determine...

Patches? We Don' Need No Steenkin Patches . . .

All: Thanks for the advice and information!!!! Jeeze I started off with BP a while back with everything "Off The Shelf" and now own a metallurgical factory, melt my own beeswax/mutton tallow, have a hand-made custom ramrod, learned how to use a set of precision files, etc. etc. and now have...

Patches? We Don' Need No Steenkin Patches . . .

Sir Michael: Not familiar with "TOW" or "RMC" and Google comes up with thousands of hits, totally unrelated to patches . . . ? (really need 0.007" patches) Steve in North Texas

Patches? We Don' Need No Steenkin Patches . . .

Sorry; couldn't resist! Anyhow Have searched the forum a bit to find an updated recommendation(s) for sources of patches and haven't found what I was looking for. I need a source of high-quality patches in various thicknesses; mainly looking at .36 caliber in 0.005" - 0.018" or so with high...

    Carleton Underhammer Information?

Gurus: Anyone else out here with a Pedersoli Carleton Underhammer (reproduction circa 1850s "poor man's dueling pistol" in .36 cal)? The "owner's manual" [sic] from Pedersoli is somewhat shall we say "sparse" with information about disassembly etc. I did download everything I could off...

    Swiss #2 (fffg) Retail Availability?

Mike: Just picked up a Pedersoli Carleton Underhammer . . . really unique lockwork (the trigger guard acts as the mainspring; sliding a hammer block along the bottom of the frame against the nipple, which is screwed into an underhanging drum!). Looks kind of like a "poor man's dueling...

    Swiss #2 (fffg) Retail Availability?

Sorry about the situation in Bavaria- we get to recieve shipments of 50 lbs . . . but the political situation here is deteriorating rapidly (haven't honored our own constitution since the end of our War of Northern Agression). AFAIK Swiss #2 is fffg (3f) and 12 gr is the recommended load for...

    Swiss #2 (fffg) Retail Availability?

Thinking of ordering 5 lbs Swiss #2 from PowderInc (~18/lb) but would prefer to just buy "by the pound" (or two) over the counter. Taking a wild stab here- anyone know of a retail outlet for Swiss powder near North Texas (DFW area)? Or around Austin? No biggie- I'm sure I'll burn 5 lbs...
